getting family to quit

for 17 år siden 0 19 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Oh boy if someone gave me a "Quit smoking" book or something like that for Christmas... I'd be guaranteed to smoke twice as much in defiance because not only would I be angry with the person giving me such a "gift", but also with myself for making them think of me as an ashtray. I'd also never read that book. Don't do it unless you want them to avoid you in future. (Which is what I would do.) However, if you want to get them to stop, how about asking them if they would consider one of the Allen Carr clinics if you gave it to them as a present? Or a voucher for something like that? Not as a Christmas thing, but as a "when you're ready, I'm going to help" kind of present. I realize you mean well, but ask yourself how you would have reacted when you were still smoking, if someone had done what you suggested. I bet you'd have felt horribly guilty, angry and ashamed. Not a nice thing at Christmas, and likely to have the exact opposite effect you're trying to achieve. Ergo - not a good plan even though you mean well. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 478 Amount Saved: 69.75 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 11 Mins: 22 Seconds: 29

Kiwi, I agree with Katy. They have to quit when their ready. Maybe get them a book as a side present or for a New Year's Eve present. Good Luck! I really wish this was possible. There are a lot of people in my family who smoke and take the fact very lightly. I wish there was a way to trick smokers into wanting to quit... Maybe hypnotizing them in their sleep?? lol. It is really scary to watch someone you love smoke after you have done all the research and discovered what smoking REALLY does to your body. But alas, when someone tried to get me to stop smoking I also would dig my heels in, smoking more than before. They have to get there themselves and I think the best thing to do is let them know about your decision (to quit) and let them know that if they ever chose to you could help them to BE SUCCESSFUL. I think this will be my point of attack this christmas. No 'non-smoking' presents, but no cigars either!!! :( My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/9/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 74 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 596 Amount Saved: $261.96 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 20 Mins: 7 Seconds: 27

My kids (29 years old..bless 'em) left booklets, exercise ball, Allen Carr's book just laying around. I put them away, then took them out and used them when I needed them. I wouldn't have liked them as a present, however. I'd have to agree - any attempts to coerce me into quitting made me dig in my heals harder....it would kind of feel the same as if my hubby gave me a thigh master. I don't think that I would have wanted a "Quit Smoking" book for Christmas. However, if someone who had quit gave me the book (not on Christmas) and told me how much they cared about me, told me how much the book helped them and told me to keep it for when the time was right for me....there is no doubt that I would have read that book at some point. Good luck in your efforts to help your family enjoy the freedom of quitting! Cheermom your story brought tears to my eyes...why maybe because i'm an emotional basketcase but probably more because of the gentle way you are handling your daughter, I hope she reads it and stops smoking before it becomes too difficult for her. I agree you can't force it upon anyone, it has to come from them and they have to be ready to quit. If i'd have received a quit smoking book or presents for Christmas I'd have been pretty upset with Santa! Mate You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink! We cant preach but just by setting the example you are doing the right thing. I started down this route and soon realised that when I stopped banging my head on the wall it stopped hurting! MERRY CRIMBOLD! Kiwi, Good stuff. My hubby always walks out of room when I start talking about my quit. Not just with my smoking members of family, but other smokers. They are always curious about how I quit. They asked me lots of questions. I try to be positive yet realistic about it. Just a thought.. Maybe it would be neat if we could get business cards of the SSC and website. To give to those who are curious. I would not do so as a Christmas present....but... What originally got my attention (I had 'thought' about quitting every once in awhile) was a package that my daughter had sent to me in the mail from the American Lung Association. It contained 5 booklets about smoking and help to quit, information on different smoking cessation aids, stickers, etc... I asked her why she sent it to me and she went and retrieved a recording she made of me in a coughing fit and said, because I love you. :confuse: How do you argue with that? They laid on the counter for a month or two, then a trip to the Dr. telling me I had emphysema prompted me to actually read them. Several attempts later, I finally feel good about my quit and I NEVER cough anymore (like that, anyway) :) It's a personal decision, Kiwi, that they have to make for themselves, but you can help without nagging with subtle hints... Kiwi, You've received some great advice from your fellow quitters. I would also so have to agree. It is a personal decision that every smoker has to make for themselves. What you can do is try to have your quit come up in conversation or leave these books in a place where they'll be seen. Who knows, maybe they've considered quitting? Maybe they'll have questions you can answer for them. Just as Katy said, set the example and hopefully they'll follow to make it a team effort. Danielle _______________________ The SSC Support Team
