This is Great! Sitting at the PC (one of my worst triggers), and this discussion of smell actually "curbed my crave" and replaced it with the urge to clean  I haven't quite recovered my sense of smell because of the cold/virus thing that hit a couple days before my quit date...but...I remember how bad everything smells. They say exercise helps heal too, so today I'm going shopping for some cleaning products to rid my surroundings of the odor before...my sense of smell returns...Yey!!! thank guys My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 2 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 112 Amount Saved: $9.74 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 7 Mins: 54 Seconds: 45

Monica: I know exactly what you mean! I was shocked to discover how bad smokers smell. I'm embarrassed for myself retroactively. It's just nasty! My husband, who still smokes, thinks I'm taking an "attitude", but my repulsion to the smell is very real. I'm as surprised as anybody, to tell you the truth. Good for you, though, for being honest with your friend. Monica, I know what you mean. I had a couple of people that smoked at my house New Year's Eve, and they would go out and smoke, and when they came back in, they would come up to talk to me and OMG...their breathe reaked of cigeretee smoke...it was terrible. I once smelled like that at all the past parties, but no more. Monica...we don't smell and make people nauseated anymore!!! Stay strong Sweety!!! Proud of you. It's tough. Especially not easy to be honest with someone you care about. You have to protect your quit. With any luck maybe this will register for her. I imagine she was understanding. I really thought I'd be passed this at this point in my quit but boy today I learned otherwise. I went to the mall with a friend .. yes, she smokes. Anyway, we walked around gabbing and window shopping and then decided to go for a coffee. Slipped into the coffee shop and ordered the coffee..normal right? Well, she said she was just going to step outside for a quick cig .. she did, she returned and oh my gawd! I didn't really realize how horrible she smelled from one cig! I felt nauseated,,worse than when I had my own slip. Some time passed and we were heading back to the car and she said she was just going to smoke one cig on the way back to the car. I just couldn't do it.. I told her to walk ahead of me, smoke it and then I'll have to wait a few minutes before sitting with her in the car. I explained in a very tactful way that I just simply couldn't handle the smell of tobacco on her. Thank goodness she's understanding.. I mean I was the one who told her that smoking in front of me - what with being outside and all would be fine. I was so wrong. Maybe one day I'll be able to watch, smell.. but not yet.. maybe never, who knows. -- just sharing my reactions and how taken aback I was by them. AuntDeb.. so glad this post inspired you to go and get your cleaning utensils and start scrubbing up your place. Believe me, from experience, that if I didn't clean BEFORE my sense of smell returned to normal I would have gagged my way through my clean up! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww the sweeeeeeeeeet smell of us NON SMOKER'S ! And if we smell so good on the outside can you just imagine how CLEAN we are becoming on the inside? All of those carcinogens leaving our bodies... It's a TOTAL cleansing of the body.. Let's embrace it and celebrate it ALL ! Then we could go even deeper .. cleansing our mind of the filthy thoughts of smoking -- OH how we've grown in so many wonderful ways :) Monica58 My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,289 Amount Saved: $576 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 5 Mins: 59 Seconds: 12

Just a quick thought about smelly smokers.. Our sense of smell and taste is so much better now as non smokers so maybe when we 'thought' we didn't stink we simply didn't really notice it as being that bad.. and now that our senses are so acute to smell and taste it makes it SOOOO HORRID! just a thought.. and either way>>> IT JUST PLAIN STINKS! LOL windy, that's what I thought too about the hand lotion and mints ! Who the hell did we think we were kidding! A A A A!!! We were stinkos ! And yes, my friend, thank goodness is very understanding... However, I now know I just CANNOT be around someone who smokes right now. Most of my friends have all quit, actually for some years now -- Thing was though they all quit because they HAD to due to health probs... Yes Kait, we don't smell awful.. we smell GREAT! And Butterfly... I just keep learning what my triggers are when they present themselves. I really thought I could handle watching her and even the smell on her.. But I learned I was quite wrong. Thanks for your posts.. You know hanna, it's quite possible that he (your hubby) was used to the smell as well..therefore it didn't effect him. So many of us who've posted really never knew how disgusting the smell was on us. I keep thinking about this smell thing.. Here's a story for you>>> I remember when I was in hospital back in '95. I had a complete hysterectomy and after 3 days laying on that same pillow, filled up with morphine and all, I could smell the NICOTINE on the pillow case. I asked the nurse what the smell was (just to confirm that I was right) and she said it was indeed the nicotine. She told me that it was coming out of the roots of my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG...I was SOOOOOOOOO freaked out and embarrassed by this! Did I quit back then?..no! I just made a point of washing my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY! Imagine that huh.. it seeps out of your pores and the roots of all the hair on your body... DAMN GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Sure hope no one reads all of these horrible stories before they have to eat... LOL! I know it's not funny but I'm in a very giddy mood..I get giddy when I get anxious and just remembering that time in the hospital has made me a tad anxious. Take care.. KEEP THE QUIT and SMELL WONDERFUL !
