Ann: I know that it might be tough on you, being in such close quarters with this addiction, but the opportunity that you have to be a silent role model is incredible...Perhaps you might want to use the knowledge that you are leading in the most courageous way possible (silently) as your motivating image in this scenario...The greatest thing about this is that your grand daughter is going to know her grandmother as a non-smoker...How beautiful is that...Good luck, stay strong and pack all of your coping skills, there will be moments when you will need them all... Stay strong nonic

Ann, You are going to do fine! With a month behind you and the innocent smell of your granddaughter beside you... "YOU CAN'T FAIL"!!! LOL Have a great trip and watch your Son and Daughter in-law smile at the "new you". (just don't rag them out about smoking...they will quit when they are ready) Your Quit will enable you the tools to keep your granddaughter from smoking...and she will look up to you as an example. (if Grandma can quit...maybe Mom and Dad will too!) Go to the beach if you can and breathe some of that ocean breeze.. I used to live in Florida (St.Pete/Clearwater area)...March should be starting to warm up there. You can't smoke in Florida restaurants...so might be a good idea to go to some frequently. Welcome..welcome..welcome... auntdeb My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 31 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,575 Amount Saved: $147.25 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 8 Mins: 6 Seconds: 56

Anne: You can't possibly be an "oldie" -- you sound too much like me! I'm also a 35-year smoker and grandmother to a beautiful 2-year old granddaughter. And I know that I'M not old, so I declare the same for you! My husband is unfortunately still smoking, (and in the house). The smell is driving me mad (I honestly never knew how bad it smelled). What I found helped me the most (and I'm coming up on 4 months quit here pretty soon) is stepping back and really LOOKING at the addiction and watching my husband smoke. He's not happy, he hates himself as a smoker. I never say anything to him, but I notice in the last few days he's making comments about getting ready to quit. Hurray! Just stay firm in your commitment to yourself to quit -- you're doing a fantastic job. Enjoy that gorgeous baby girl of yours and I like the suggestion of taking her out to the park a lot -- something you'll both like. Welcome to our family of quitters -- young and old (you and me? We're young!) Keep the faith -- and your wonderful quit My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 117 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,707 Amount Saved: $936 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 9 Mins: 24 Seconds: 21

Congratulations to you. And, you are right to be thinking now about protecting your quit. I think it's marvelous that your son and his wife will experience you as a non-smoker. I believe that even if nothing is said out loud that it will have a profound impact on them. Maybe that would be one of your motivators for strength - the role-modeling you will be providing for a smoke-free, healthy environment for your child, spouse and precious grandbaby. Thanks for all the good advice. What is keeping me away from the smokies is all the food and candy I'm consuming. I am not going to weigh myself and I'm not going to worry about it either. I will deal with the weight this spring. I live in Michigan so there is very little to do in the winter. I don't like the cold so outside is out of the question. I guess I figure one thing at a time. When I get my cravings I just keep thinking I will not go back to day one. I have gone through alot of things in my life but nothing as bad as that first week of quitting. YUK!!!!! I know how it is for all of you and just keep up the good work. If I can do it after 35 yrs. you can too. I am in the beginning of my second month. I can't believe it. I am so happy. I did the cold turkey thing except for chewing 4 pieces of nicorette gum a day. I will switch over to reg. gum soon. I am going to my sons house in Fl. for a month March 1st. I'm a little anxious because his wife and himself smoke. We have a two yr. old grandaughter there that I think I will spend alot of time with her so I don't have to be around the smoke. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Keep up the good work everyone and thanks so much for being there. This really helps me. One day at a time. Hey Ann, So happy that you are doing so well. You have a good attitude and that means soooo much. Enjoy you visit with your family and don't forget to take your tools with you. That is what ever you use to keep your hand or mouth busy. Because BUSY, BUSY, BUSY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME....Spend as much time with your granddaughter I'm sure that will keep you busy. Best wishes to you!!! ;p Sunshine My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 390 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,639 Amount Saved: $1365 Life Gained: Days: 57 Hrs: 6 Mins: 37 Seconds: 18

Ann, Great success! Pack your coping mechanisms and enjoy your family time. Step away from the situation if necessary and take your granddaughter for a nice walk. We are here for you, so come online if you need us :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
