I understand Rhonda... I seem to be going back and forth between angry and depressed this past week. I'm not even thinking about cigarettes. I wonder if it's a chemical change in our brain from the absence of nicotine and other chemicals. Hopefully it will stabilize soon. I don't like myself like this very much. You are not alone. It seems like every day my mood gets worse! I'm still taking Chantix, but no other meds or NRT. Is this normal in a quit?? I've been logging these moods in my daily planner. The reason I started smoking again the last time I quit was because of the terrible mood I was in. Karen/Interesting, Looks like we're all at about the same place in our quits. I have been going to the gym almost every day and it seems to help in the evenings. My problems start when my feet hit the floor in the mornings. My horrible mood seems to last for about 2 hours before changing over to depression. I feel really tired and wonder how much longer I can keep this up. I DO NOT WANT a cigarette...I just want to feel normal again. Rhonda, I'm using Chantix too. I am not having bad moods. In fact I feel great! When I quit cold-turkey...is when I experienced the most severe depression I've ever had in my life and !#@&*y mood swings. That's why I chose a med this time to help me. Nicotine masked underlying depression. However, you might want to talk with your Doctor about this. He might want to do a thyroid test or something. Hang in there, you can do this... "We really don't want to go back to smoking, do we?" Rhonda, You already have some good advice here. Personally, I found that whan I quit smoking until about day 60 every day was consumed with thoughts of NOT smoking. This was so frustrating that I found I was in a miserable mood all the time. Don't let it get you down too much; I know its hard but you are going to feel better than you have ever felt in just a few short weeks. The bad moods are coming from a dying nic-addict inside- crying out and trying to make you miserable enough to feed him!! Try logging something positive in your journal- you know you are in a grumoy mood but the more you focus on it the worse it is going to get. What positive things have you noticed since you quit? The benefits (of quiting) far outweigh the costs though the rewards are sadly not instantaneous. Hang on- try to keep your head up. Be proud and don;t let your addiction consume you once again. Rhonda - My moods have been up and down and all over the chart. I definately went through periods of time when I was angry, depressed, etc. Fortunately, there were some good days in between to keep me going. I don't think any of us know what is "normal" but if you don't start feeling better soon, you might want to talk to your Doctor about it. It's all perfectly normal Rhonda - I was pretty miserable for a the first couple of months. Why don't you have a word with your doctor - or whoever provided you with the medication, just to be on the safe side. I think perhaps it's time to have a good think about a reward system. Little things that help you relax. The gym is good, yes, but not so much fun. How about taking some time out to pamper yourself? This addiction is a little blighter - but you can win! Hi, have been through both the cranky and the depressed (I've suffered from depression epsiodes for years now). Exercise helps the cranks. Music can be mood enhancing. What about a daily walk with some headphones to lift your spirits? exercise releases endorphins - "happy" hormones. I also read recently that a LOT of women are very very short of Omega 3 oils in their diets. I bought a good quality Omega 3 tablet and I cannot tell you the difference to my moood. In any case, hang in there, the depression DOES lift in time. My smoking counsellor says you have to go through a grieving process the same as we do when we lose anthing/anybody that has been a big feature of our lives for a long time. And the grieving process is the same as we can go through quitting. Denial. Anger. Sadness. Bargaining. Acceptance. Hope you feel better soon. Hey Rhonda, When I wake up angry I go for a walk right away. No wind or rain can stop me from that. That helps so good for me and it's way better than smoking. Maybe you should try it too. I am not angry or cranky anymore but I still walk every day.
