I have a question about this topic. I am a woman and have a large lump in my throat which was determined to be my swollen thyroid. They tested it for cancer and it was not cancerous. They told me that with my symptoms (loss of weight I'm 5'6" and only weigh 111 lbs., trembling, panic disorder, excessive sweating all of the time) and the swollen thyroid that it was most likely hyperthyroidism. This was a big relief to me because they were telling me that it was a medical problem and that I could get treatment and not have my panic disorder. Well I did the radioactive iodine test and the results came back that it was fine and showed no signs of hyperthyroidism. They then drained the lump with needles when they tested for cancer. Well the lump came back pretty quickly and this was about 2 years ago and it's still there. The hospital where I got the iodine test is known for being somewhat incompetent. So my question is that if my thyroid is swollen and the lump came back even after being drained, and I still have so many of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, could the doctor at the hospital be mistaken about the results of the iodine test? Could I really have hyperthyroidism?
Hi Steve,
I'm sorry to hear what you have been going through. I can understand why you would feel like throwing in the towel, but you have come to the right place. There are many people here at the panic center who understand what you are going through and want to help, even if its just to listen. Use the tools on the left of your screen and keep posting, we're here for you.

Well Steve, I'm not here to lecture but I'm guessing the 5 years of self medicating with alcohol didn't help. If you are being weaned off of something now then detox might be a good idea. I had to be hospilized when they took me off of Xanax and my attacks were constant...all day long...and I thought I would never get any better. Alot of it was the withdrawls. It took some time but I did get better. I was functioning quite normally.
Now that I've had a set back and its scared the **** out of me, I too thought of 'throwing in the towel.' Its not going to happen though. We can and will get better. I think you should seriously do the detox thing. You'd be under a doctors care, then once that is completed you can see what options are available for you as far as other meds are concerned. Everyone responds differently to different types of treatment.
I'm sorry your suffering has gone on for so long. If you ever feel the need to have someone else to talk to, you can email me anytime.

Let's see...... I was on various medications with hardly any therapy & if I did get any it was no success & "self-medicated" with alcohol for around 5 years so bad it wasn't even funny, decided to quit cold turkey, I was up to a very high dose of Klonopin, was hospitilized around Christmas time to see if I could at least try to function with a lower dose and dropped down extremely fast(2 days) to virtually anything because my body's so used to it, my own pshyc is scared to switch me to something else but almost everyday for the past month has been feeling like a freaking nightmare I'm feeling absolutely horrible coming off of that I just cannot put into words,he wants me to go to detox for it now & afterwards he's going try me on Xanax XR & I plan to see a therapist.... & this goes on & on & on & on sometimes I just feel like throwing in the towel....
1998...the year my world CRUMBLED!
HI Steve. Its good that you are going to get tested. At least you will have set answer as to whether or not its contributing to your problem. You say you've been going thru 6 years of hell....what type of treatment are you on?
Cheryl
Hey everybody it's funny before I even saw this post this morning I called my physician & he's going to write a referral to a clinic for them to test my thyroid. When I was hospitalized the nurse from what I remember was told that it was "kinda up there but nothing to really worry about". But anyways I should be having the test done next week because I was told that my symptoms could mimic an overactive thyroid.
Sounds like there are different types of tests and I'm not sure which procedure I am going to wind up with but I'm going to go neverthless....I'd just love for somebody to tell me that that's all it's been or at least contributed greatly to my symptoms these past almost 6 years of HELL! But it still sounds too good be true just like when I got some other tests to rule out physical problems to be told that I'm fine.
Well it's worth a shot. Hope you're results come out OK also.
Steve
Vikkee,
Wonderful!!!!! Im so, so, so glad you did fine, and made it through the testing. Hoping all the results come back just as great as you did today.
Trish
I started to go into an explanation of the test, and how much more comprehensive it is than the blood test but I'm not qualified to do that. It seems to me that they can see a whole lot more, since they're actually looking at a picture of a gland. I'm not a doctor, but I feel better about this test than a blood test and doctor. My cardiologist ordered it to rule out the reason for my palpitations. Check/recheck with your physician. From what I understand, the nuclear test is standard.
Hi Vikkee,
I was diagnosed about 4 years ago with hypothyroidism. All the doctor did was take a small amount of blood (TSH test) and feel my thyroid (I think it's called palpating) - I've never heard of the test you talked about - is it supposed to be a more effective test? Just curious.
