I have had thyroid tests for the past two years now; and was diagnosed with Thyroiditis, which means my body is attacking the thyroid; and sub-clinical Hypothyroidism. I am now taking thyroxin, a synthetic thyroid tablet once a day. When I first started taking it, I could sleep like a baby with pleasant dreams for the first time in a long time. But as for the tests, they were blood tests only. I thought Iodine was the natural substance which increases the thyroxine your thyroid produces naturally, but I am not a doctor. I had no panic over these procedures, only a longing to find out if this was my problem which was causing many symptoms. If you find out that this is your problem, maybe it will also be your solution for some of your problems. It is better to know and do something about it, then not to know and wonder what you could have done for yourself to help! Hope everything goes well. Please let us know.

Woohoo! I had the test and besides being in one of the most uncomfortable positions, I made it. I did have to stop the tech before the last image they took cause I was feeling nauseated and a little claustrophobic, but after a few minutes rest I was fine. Thanks all for the support!

Don't beat yourself up Vikki. You've taken the capsule and you are still able to write to us and tell us how you are feeling, so that alone should tell you something. Its NOT going to hurt you. You are stronger and tougher than you think. Try to think postive thoughts. Tell yourself how important this thyroid test is and in a couple of hours it will all be over and you will wonder why you were worried about it in the first place. I'm so glad you didn't cancel the test. You should really be proud of yourself. Cheryl

Thanks, As I write this, I have taken the capsule and was sent home till I have the actual scan at 2:30. I'm waiting for something to happen with this foreign substance coursing through my body. If I have a panic attack now, it's cause I really talked myself into it. It's been over an hour and every little pain or discomfort I have is like doom to me. But I do want to thank you, cause I probably wouldn't have gone. Sodium lactate. Now I remember. Oh good grief. Next I'll be worried about aspirin giving me a panic attack.

Hi Vikkee, Be sure to let the doctors and nurses know that you are having these concerns. They will understand. I have been working with many people who have a history of anxiety/panic. When I am in the Operating Room, it is our job to have the patient feeling relaxed and all questions should be answered before a procedure is started. So please, ask questions and voice your concerns. It is our job to make you feel safe and comfortable. Good Luck! Melanie

Many people have thyroid test done and its good that your doctor is requesting one, since that is one of the crucial test when diagnosising panic attacks. A underactive or overactive thyroid mimics panic attack systems. To ease your fears, it is SODIUM LACTATE that will induce panic attacks, not sodium iodine. Good Luck tommorrow!! Prayers are with you to just relax and be comforted and calm. Blessings, Trish

Okay, I have a horrible phobia of taking anything new and foreign into my body. I'm supposed to go tomorrow for a thyroid test and I did call and ask questions, but now I'm not happy with the answers. I have to swallow a nuclear whatever capsule that is Iodine 123 or sodium iodide, and I thought I read somewhere that doctors use sodium iodide to bring on panic. I just told my husband that I'm not going tomorrow, but maybe I'm freaking out over nothing. Has anyone else had the thyroid test? I have a terrible fear of having a panic attack I can't get over. For instance, a shot of Demerol or any other narcotic gives me a major panic attack and leaves me screaming. I really hate the hospital, can you tell? Does anyone have the calming information to maybe help me understand this test so maybe I can go through with it? As of now, I'm a wreck just thinking of it. I should add that I've had attacks of racing heart the past 2 months and I personally think it's peri-menopause, but this is a test they're using to rule out stuff.
