There's nothing wrong with cutting back, many do and are successful with the practice. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. I went into withdrawal early (prior to my quit date) and I was not prepared for that to happen. (it doesn't happen to everyone but it did happen to me) Also when cutting back, some of us will smoke whatever number of cigarettes we are still having with more intensity. On the other hand, some find it helps to taper off slowly. You'll have to decide what works best for you.
Regardless of how many you smoke up until your quit date I would encourage you to really pay attention to the act of smoking. Don't drink anything, don't smoke while watching tv or doing anything else. Sit down and waste that time just smoking while concentrating on how bad it smells, the chemical taste, the nasty ashes, the smoke polluting the air. Think about how much you hate it and how much it costs to poison yourself.

p.s. For whatever it is worth~The first time I read the book (which I do like very much) I smoked the entire time and did not get it. The next time I read it I had already joined the SSC and I UNDERSTOOD IT PERFECTLY! lol
