Nice handle, by the way. I'm glad you didn't use "doomed". I was in exactly the same boat two weeks ago as I approached my quit date. Over 25 years of smoking. I was attempting to cut down but every time I had a smoke I thought I was probably doomed. The first few days were a real fight (I had one slip too). I slept alot because that was the only time I didn't have the crave. Now I'm on day 10 and feeling much better. Still craving some, but much easier to handle. I feel like I'm through the worst and can't believe it! It DOES get better. Do it. You won't regret it. I am a newbie quitter, as of this morning, after 23 years of 20 butts a day, so I don't feel like I can really give any sound advice as of yet, but wanted to try to give a little bit of encouragement. One minute at a time if that is what it takes to quit. We are all addicts of the nicotine. Once the desire to Quit has out weighed the desire to smoke, quitting can be possible. Do not think of it as losing a friend.. think of it as gaining your life back. Freedom from addiction is a long road. I have only just begun that road, but I KNOW, I will NEVER touch another cigarette for the rest of my life. Either I quit, or I will die an early death and go broke doing it. I will not live to see my grandchildren grow up (I don't have any grandchildren yet, but still want to be around to spoil them when that day does arrive... smile). No matter how long you have smoked, or how many butts you smoke in a day, you CAN QUIT. YOU CAN DO IT. YOU CAN DO IT. YOU CAN DO IT. Big hugs to you!!! i dont know if my message is in this forum or not, i'm not to computer literate. anyway, i was looking for someone in my same mold to buddy with. i have smoked for too many years and am addicted. i have tried ever method that is out there save chantix, but id rather not take any pills. but i need to quit smoking. i cant breath anymore, oh yes i know , well that's a great reason to quit. but i just dont get it. i hate the smell, the way its killing me. today i put on the patch and after 3 hours ripped it off and smoked. i walked, but after i'm relaxed i lit up. what's a person to do. am i just doomed?

Beefree: Look at the screen name you gave yourself, "Beefree". Well, you CAN be free. But you have to WANT to be free of this addiction more than you want to smoke. It sounds simplistic, I know, but it really is true. I hope you've spent some time here reading. You can learn so much about your addiction and how to conquer it. But you must be prepared. Just throwing on a patch isn't going to cut it, as long as you still feel deep down that you would be giving up something you love. Please find Allen Carr's book, "Quitting Smoking the Easy Way". It can make such a difference in getting your mindset where it must be in order to be a successful quitter. For me, I had to get mad, really, really mad at this addiction and the 35 years I've wasted on it. No more! But it is this anger that keeps me going. And believe me, I never believed I could actually quit. Now I know better. By the way, I did use Chantix and found it extremely helpful. Let us help you believe that you can be stronger than your addiction. beefree, You are not doomed. You are just like the rest of us. We all have felt what you feel now. We are all addicts here. Quitting isn't easy and seems absolutely impossible when we are in the midst of our addiction. I tried to quit a million times and wasn't ever successful more than a few hours before giving in. I'm not sure what the difference was this time. All I know is that there were several things that led me to this quit. The main one simply being that I was sick of smoking and sick of what it was doing to me. After quitting, I realized that I was a slave to the cigarette. I began to see my addiction for what it was. It was so much more than a bad habbit. I am an addict. Quitting meant not smoking. I adopted N.O.P.E (not one puff ever) and decided this was the only way to quit. Once you have had enough and your desire to quit outweights your desire to smoke, you will succeed in quitting. YOu have to want your quit more than anything in the world. You have to fight for it. Right now you are enslaved to smoking. Take one step away and keep walking. Do not turn back no matter what happens. Keep moving forward. You CAN break free. BEEFREE - Noone is doomed. It just feels hopeless because the addiction is so strong and it seems impossible to live without your next fix. But it IS possible. I thought I could never be free, and here I am over a year later. I cried and sobbed and slept my way through the first week of withdrawal. BUT I had finally come to a point to realize the depth of my addiction, and that the only way out was through the muck. I threw away every smoke and ashtray, I stayed glued to this site or stayed in bed, I read and read and read and posted, I decided I was gonna do this no matter what. I was depressed, I was angry, my hubby and I were in conflict, I hated not smoking. But, one moment at a time, I resisted the urge. I decided I really wanted to live. I know it seems impossible right now, but it is NOT! Once you taste the freedom, you will wonder what in the heck took you so long. We have all been where you are...you have to blindly have faith in those of us who went before you. Just follow the footsteps...the end is nearer than you think! beefree...you have to realize that you are dealing with an addiction. Nicotine is highly addictive....I know of no one who uses it on a regular basis and doesn't become addicted to various degrees. that is why you can hate it and still crave it. be sick and still light up. This is an addiction that will follow you right up to the moments of death. You have to realize that to beat it you have to get the control away from it. You begin by saying no to lighting up. you distract and delay...you have lists of things to do to see you through the craves. You have to WANT it.....and that need has to overcome the addictions power to make you smoke. it's hard...but it's also doable.....we are all here to testify to that.
