sticking with the program

This is a continuation of a thread that was under "Coping with withdrawal symptoms"... but the discussion seems to have evolved enough to start a new thread. Thanks for all the replies and advice on the day that I forgot to wear my patch. At the time I was disappointed in myself for panicking and driving home to get a patch instead of toughing it out for a day. Some agreed that I did the right thing and others said that the patch is perhaps a method of prolonging an addiciton and is not a good thing (for the very reason that I now seem to transferred my addiction from cigarettes to the patch). After much reflection I think I did the right thing, and I am going to religiously stick with the program the patch offers. I try to always do what I say I'm going to do. Unfortunately that also means that I do not promise things unless I know I can/will do them. For example I never told anyone (over my 25 year habit) that I would quit smoking, and that disappointed many (especially my wife). I did not go a single hour trying to quit during all those years. I always said that I would know if and when I was ready to quit and I would do it in one go. That is what I'm doing now. I also said when deciding to quit that I would use the patch and follow the program from beginning to end. Advice from a few (Phil, Katy, et al.) was that following the program was important for them in their success. So I now have two reasons to stick with the program: 1. Thinking I can do it 1/2 way and still quit smoking is not necessarily true (although it may be for some) 2. I made the promise to myself and others. Are there other good reasons (personal or not) to stick with the program out there? I'd especially like to hear the advice of a medical professional on the phenomenon of addiction to the patch. When I started this quitting business back in October, it was Cold Turkey for me. But I relapsed, quit, relapsed, quit and just couldn't seem to get over the mountain (so I thought at the time). When I finally decided I'd had enough, I wanted to give myself any increased chance for success, thus the patch. I knew I could not tolerate the 21mg, so I developed my own plan. 14 mg for 3 weeks, 10.5mg for 4 weeks, 7 mg for 4 weeks. Now a few times, Ol Nic has tried to change my mind about that plan. I have always refused his advice (Never have gotten good advice from Nic). I'm stickin with the plan. As far as addiction to the patch. It's an addictive substance. PERIOD. NRT Programs have been developed with the idea that you don't use it passed the prescribed times. These times are based on research. Being that it is an over the counter drug, it is your responsibility to use it correctly. You know yourself best. Stick with your plan.
