Thanks for the information. I started walking about four years ago. With this quit I knew I had to add something else in or I would lose it again. I went back to smoking because I could not handle the weight gain, stupid but that is what happened. This time I working with my doctor, I am walking on regular basis and I join a 30 minute work out three times a week. I must tell you so far I have held my own and I am feeling great. Baby steps, but feeling GREAT.

Exercise is a great way to keep your body and mind healthy and it is also a great coping mechanism for quitting :)

I should have mentioned that any form of exercise is good for both males and females!
So Shaky I agree with you that burning off calories whether it be bench pressing, running, walking, etc etc is in my opinion a necessary and required coping tool to succeed in our quest to remain non smoker's !

I wonder if it's just women?? I'm a dude :8|: and I gotta tell ya, If I don't get to the gym every couple of days, my cravings are through the roof. And not just the seven second kind. Like the persistant pressure kind. Aggression and anxiety, etc. This was happening two days ago. But I went to the gym and burned 750 calories! I've felt better since, but I can feel it building again. I call it the Anxiety Monster; it's hard to describe. Best I've come up with is that it's all the stuff that I was stifling with cigarettes before and now I have to actually deal with it.
Anyway, point is: exercise does help! Male or female.

I found that going out for 2-3 walks a day, each at least a 1/2 hour to one hour depending on the day everyday of the week REALLY helped me through. I had stated this in an earlier post some time ago that walking with my disc man cleared the cobwebs, the stress and anxieties of not just stopping smoking but for all the stresses in my life. I was able to 'zone out' while walking and walking. To this day I still walk every day at least twice and then add all the everyday household chores and the caregiving for hubby.
So Windy I think that exercise should be implemented right from the get go. It was what got me this far after 3 failed attempts. Now I am the victor in this quest :)
So people.. GET OUT THERE AND M O V E ! ! ! ! !

I don't know if I should be posting this in weight loss or general forum but I was just reading a fitness magazine while biking at the gym. In this magazine, they reported on a study of women who were quitting smoking. Apparently, over 80 % of women who combined nicotine replacement AND cardio/weight lifting at least 3 times a week were successful in quitting smoking. Sooooooooooo.... all that exercise will not only help reduce with the weight thing BUT it will also increase our chances of success.
