Thanks to each of you for replying... I don't think this is the addict trying to go back to smoking.. I have very few craves now and personally think that trying to smoke one cig would kill me. I just feel like I am dying here. Yes, I do go to Drs.. They refer me to other Drs. By the time we get something taken care of (if ever) two new aliments have developed. I just can't believe smoking was masking all this. I was too well and even the Drs. all thought so. Right now we are trying to tend to the acid reflux or whatever has burned my tongue and esphogous. Tomorrow I deal with the stitches and soreness with the surgeon who did the appendectomy. Then later I have another appt. to discuss the shortness of breath and going to make an appt with counselor. I quit smoking to spend the rest of my life in Drs. offices.... I will say that the $1,000 on cigs I have saved is going to come in handy on the $8-10,000 I owe on the surgery. Glad I have retired teacher insurance.............

Big Bertha, The SSC has a sister site dealing with depression where you can do an annonymous survey to help you. You can print out the results and take them to your doctor if it helps, because sometimes it is hard to get the words out. It's at http://www.depressioncenter.net/wb%2Ddat/ It is very common to feel down around this time in your quit. I know that I did, but I did come through it soon afterwards. I hope you can find courage to decide what to do next, but resuming smoking is not the answer. My best wishes to you. Dear Bertha, I really feel sorry you feel bad and I hope you can enjoy things again. Talk to your doctor but try to see things more positive. You sound like a nice woman and you are doing great for the not smoking part. Once you try to have fun again you will feel way better, believe me. One more thing for me to say Bertha: I love you (hug) Dutch :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 408 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,251 Amount Saved: 1203.6 Life Gained: Days: 56 Hrs: 19 Mins: 39 Seconds: 44

Morning BB! I'm saddened to hear you aren't feeling well but I'm glad to hear you are NOT smoking!!! We both know that won't solve any of your health problems. :) Your post sounds like you are having a tough time but doing the right thing by consulting your physician. I quit smoking in October 2006 and have gained a considerable amount of weight, have a horrible lower back, and developed a nasty case of acid reflux. And on top of all those lovely little ailments, I'm smack dab in the spotlight of menopause. Why, most days I just couldn't be a more fun person to hang out with! LOL (haha) I just try to tackle one problem at a time and my doctor has been wonderfully understanding and patient. Just last week I visited him with a totally bloody right eye. Seems like I coughed really hard (don't even remember coughing) and burst all the blood vessels in my right eye. I looked absolutely gorgeous!!!! And the children I work with were terrified of that eye! Anyway, what I really wanted to tell you was hang in there, keep pushing away at the depression and seeking relief for the gerd, the angiography and anything else that comes your way! I refuse to blame any of my frailties on quitting smoking! Maybe smoking masked things, but now that I've taken off the mask, I love who I am. Overweight, acid reflux, bloody eye and all!!!! Stay strong!!!! Hi Big Bertha - I have to agree with the others...your health problems seem to be ones that are caused by smoking rather than not smoking. We woman smokers are MUCH more likely to have lung cancer and heart disease...the best thing that you could have done for your health was to quit before things got worse. Now 2 or 3 happy days out of 100 is not acceptable. Are you on the right antidepressants? Is it time for a change? You are right about avoiding activities though....The whole idea is to replace our smoking memories with non-smoking memories. You need to figure out what will be a reward for you - Renting a movie, special snack, phone call with a friend, a new book, etc. Then you have to pair these activities with something that makes you feel good. (i.e. Do some gardening as a non-smoker and then go out and reward yourself with a new book - Finish your housework - Have a tasty snack) It's definately time to start building some of those activities back into your life. It might also be time to find some new activities. My favourite stress reducer used to be playing internet cards and smoking my brains out....Now I like going to the gym or snuggling bed with my remote control. Quitting smoking is a roller coaster ride...but you need some "ups" with those "downs"...Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. Bertha, Cigarettes aren't medicine. That is the addiction talking. smoking causes gerd...not stops it smoking causes bad arteries and breathing problems.... not stops it. I'm not saying you have this stuff.....but actually if you are not feeling well you should do cartwheels that you quit. Keep following up with you doctors. The depression I do understand. I had quite a bout of it. My doctor told me to take St Johns Wart for the depression...and for me it has done wonders. (don't take ANYTHING) without your doctors approval. Let us know how you make out. I'm sure you will be fine. I have gerd too...and I take prevacid. It works great. big bertha.....why are your taste buds burned? and your throat?? are you saying this is from acid reflux?? and another thing is there can be lots of side effects of medications...including antidepressants. Can you possibly find a diagnostician? an internist might be able to diagnose you?? personally I don't think quitting smoking would be causing all you are describing....keep looking for a doctor and don't give up till you find the answer. and in the mean time...don't fall for the thinking that smoking would make all this better. There is something else going on here and you really need to persist and find the answer. good luck....and congratulations on your quit! Hi BB. It definitely sounds like smoking may have been masking some other issues. It is not uncommon for smokers to self-treat our depression and anxiety with nicotine and it definitely sounds like you are depressed. If the adjusted dose of your anti-depressant doesn't help once you give it a chance, maybe talk to your doc about trying a different one. I'm no doctor, but it seems obvious to me that you are depressed. :( As for the physical things - just think, if you were still smoking, maybe they'd be more serious. Some of those things, like the taste buds, may be a temporary part of the healing process. But, you also need to adjust your outlook. Don't run away from things. You have to live life and get past those triggers. Many of us avoid stuff in the beginning, but eventually we have to face situations. You CAN enjoy coffee, soda, etc again. But you need to reach up and grab a ray of sunshine and continue doing the things you used to enjoy until they feel good again. (With the exception of smoking, of course! :eg:) Please hang in there and feel free to vent! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hello there- The only thing that I can think of is that smoking has masked alot of symptoms for you. I seriously would talk to your doctor some more. Insist on having some blood work done. I don't see any reason why not smoking would make you not enjoy things you used to enjoy. Also, you meds have been increased, which may very well make you drowsy...read up on the side effects. If you doctor doesn't step up to the plate, see a new doctor. The squeeky wheel gets the grease! Keep me posted on what you find out. I wish we were neighbors cause I would be diggin in the dirt with you! I have been waiting several days to post this, for I just could not find the right spot. It is not for newbies; in fact, I really need help from some people who have been quit for awhile. This is certainly not meant to depress anyone in their quit.. I just need to vent and perhaps know if anyone else has had these problems. 1. Yes, I have put on alot of weight. Joined a gym to try to help that. more about this later. 2. I also did my triggers wrong. I avoided them completely. Now I enjoy nothing. Use to love yard work- hate it... use to love coffee in the morning--hate it. use to love diet sodas--hate them. You get the idea. Mentioned all this to my Dr. who doubled my anti-depressants. 3. I have no desire to smoke, but have had only a few days that i was happy since my quit over 100 days ago. That is not like me. I just stay in bed for there is nothing I enjoy doing. I don't think anyone could please me if they hung me with a new rope. I miss laughing and having fun. 4. Last Dec. I had physical and as usual everything was perfect. Never really had any physical problems. Stopped smoking on Jan. 15th, and have not been well since. Finally went to my Dr. and told him all my complaints. The shortness of breath took precendence in his mind, so he sent me to cariologist. I had electocardiogram stress test. Most all passed except he did not like something he heard in the right leg-- now I need a coronary angiography. i had one all set up when I got very ill and had to cancel. After a couple of days very ill, I had an appendectomy. Which is really stange for a 60 yr. woman. Well, the first Dr. I went to who got cared away with heart did nothing about my heartburn. Now I have gone back for that since the taste buds on my tongue are burned off and my esphogous is burned. Everything I eat taste rust and sour. And thru out all this I have only lost 5 lbs...... I have saved no money for Drs. are changing more than cigerettes... In fact, for the first time in my life, I was overdrawn last month... My question is has anyone else had medical problems since their quit and will they go away or just continue until I am a sick old person who does not smoke. i cant stand being sick and tired of sick and tired.. Any help or suggestions... [
