Jealousy Amongst Non Smokers & Smokers

for 17 år siden 0 1093 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
You're right, Flossie. It is rude. Nothing worse than a self-righteous ex-smoker. It's important to remember that we are not better than smokers because we have quit. We are luckier! For that we should be grateful, not judgemental. I was the last one in my circle to quit (9/1/07). I was the smelly one and they weren't shy in saying so. They were insutling even. They didn't smell so good themselves. I hope I don't get like that now that I've quit. I know smoking is a disgusting habit and smokers do stink but non-smokers stink too for other reasons sometimes and I don't tell them they stink, that they need to shower and/or use deodorant. Like I said, I hope I don't become "one of them" in that respect. I think it's rude.

I think I must be lucky. I was in the minority in my group of friends being one of the smokers but no-one ever voiced an opinion. The only thing that happened over the years was that the parties all became no smoking affairs with the smokers forced to go outside - or into a designated room. Now I'm a non-smoker I find parties/gatherings both easy because I don't have to go out for a smoke and hard because it was learned behaviour that I would smoke at parties! My close friends always put up with me being a smelly old smoker and are just as happy for me not to be one. My b/f smoked when we met and we were both smelly smokers but he gave up just after me because he just found the whole thing so tiresome. There's no rules! Just keep to your quit whatever anyone says. I used to have many smoking friends. However, I moved a year ago. Nobody where I am now at smoked, so I used to try to hide my smoking from them. Then I became courageous and started smoking in front of them. I actually began losing some friends because I SMOKED. One girl even straight out said to me "we can't be friends if you smoke"... my point is, the roles can and are reversed for the opposite situation as well. Smoking is a divide in our culture. Often, smokers hang with smokers and non-smokers hang with non-smokers. Of course this is not always true, but often is. This is an unfortunate situation, but I am not one that can change it... I saved a friendship by quitting smoking, and possibly my whole relationship with my g/f as well. So why not just realize that you can't change other people, or this ridiculous way of our culture, and go find some non-smoking friends. Just as in sig others, the saying goes for friends as well....."there are more fish in the sea, but some fish smell better than others" My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 336 Amount Saved: $67.20 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 1 Mins: 24 Seconds: 31

Hey, I have a NON-smoking friend that got mad when I quit! Figure that one out. I think it was just the change and she was afraid of the change. Actually, I don't consider myself quit but semi-quit because I can't give up the darn nicotine gum. I've tried and I get so stressed, that I start majorly craving a cigarette, even though I know that at this point without a cig it wouldn't even come close to being a pleasant experience. Kelly I lost a very close friend during this process, too. Was quite the trigger for me, but I persevered, with some help from my ssc friends. Still sad about it, but my quit was and is that important to me. You're doing great...hang in there -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 171 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,840 Amount Saved: $1,162.80 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 22 Mins: 9 Seconds: 16

Thank you so much, Aloha! The friend I went to the wedding with...probably my closest friend...hasn't spoken to me since. I suppose I'm a bit more emotional lately than I would be otherwise but it just makes me sad... Oh well, I'm not smoking. Nope. And, I would rather loose a friend than smoke again. That sounds really awful when I read it back but it is simply the truth. Thanks again for bumping that. It's exactly what I needed. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 420 Amount Saved: $81.90 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 7 Mins: 36 Seconds: 38

I agree Duck, if they were your "true" friends before, they should still be your friends now. So far no-one has done that to me, thank goodness. I am not sure I could take the rejection, I am an emotional person to begin with. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,213 Amount Saved: $240 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 3 Mins: 20 Seconds: 47
