Interesting thought, it has never crossed my mind to call it that. However, I sometimes thought of myself as having the "Devil may care" attitude about it. We have had bad news today, a friend of my hubby's a guy he worked with for 15 years, hubby trained him and helped him when he was in his 30's, we know his wife and 2 kids. We always kept in contact, even though my husband's been transferred a few times with his co. Well, he has lung cancer and it's now in the brain also. They have given him chemo and radiation, apparently the tumor in the brain has gone down in size, but the lung cancer keeps growing, he's 47 years old and father of two teenagers. He is, (was I hope) a heavy smoker, I remember hubby telling me, wish he wouldn't smoke so much, he coughs all the time. Well this sure reaffirms my decision. I immediately locked the gun cabinet and moved the ammo to a different location. I know that was not the point, but your description of the game was terrifying! Besides, there are no cigarettes to get rid of...we don't smoke! ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 23 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,194 Amount Saved: $184 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 10 Mins: 58 Seconds: 32

Russian Roulette... This is a game I thought I would play forever when it came to smoking. I'm so glad I finally figured it out. No more killing myself. The person who finds out they have cancer and keeps smoking doesn't amaze me at all. The person needing oxygen all the time and still smoking doesn't amaze me either. You see, I always thought that would be me one day. I was one of those smokers who said "We are going to die of something anyway. I love smoking so if that is it, that is it." Now I realize just how sad the nicotine addiction is. A little cigarette determined what would happen in my life for many years. Thankfully, I managed to break free. It wasn't an easy break but I made it and so can anyone else. It takes commitment and determination but it can be done. Thanks for a great post Joe. We all know about the game of Russian Roulette, right? There are usually no winners in that game of chance. Among its list of definitions is "An act of reckless bravado." Reckless. Good word. How many of you ever thought of smoking as reckless? Not many. As you continue to smoke, after having started usually young in life, your odds of living a long life decrease. Just like playing Russian Roulette over and over. However, when you lose at Russian Roulette, the end is usually quick. When your luck runs out with smoking you can count on months, maybe years of debilitating illness. Perhaps you are tethered to an oxygen tank or even better yet, you watch your hair fall out from the chemo therapy. Most of the time that treatment buys you a few months. Lung cancer survival rates are extremely low. So you are here. You are hopefully quit. Perhaps you are just kicking the idea around. Maybe you have some serious craves.. your body cries out for its fix of nicotine. You think you cant live without it. You perhaps rationalize that you will die someday (that is a classic junkie thought) or that you had an uncle who lived to be 90 and smoked everyday. Youve forgotten about that cough you have or the wheezing when you walk up some stairs. Life just wouldnt be right if you didnt smoke, right? Its your right to smoke, isnt it??? Besides, if it were so bad, it wouldnt be legal, would it?? You just love Russian Roulette, dont you? Is there a moral to the story? Want to keep playing Russian Roulette?
