Windy,
Yes, quitting could very likely have something to do with it. As a smoker your body is constantly fighting to repair the damage smoking causes. Smoking has also been shown to suppress immune function however the mechanism is not yet fully understood by researchers. This immune suppression has been linked to an increase in severity of symptoms and complications when smokers get a cold or the flu.
As for those with asthma, as a smoker, it makes you more sensitive to environmental triggers. Some studies also suggest that smokers are twice as likely to develop asthma than non-smokers.

I agree Windy
I have what they call Asthmatic Allergies and I am on an Inhaler. Smoking did not help much. I coughed all the time. Since I quit I have not had to use my inhaler at all, not once. Even when I caught a cold. So I am now wondering about the Asthmatic Allergies?
Anyway, I am really glad I quit, don't miss the coughing at all.

I was thinking about how many years I had been using cough suppresants to help me sleep and then during the day to help me work. ("It was just the left-over cough from that cold - Had nothing to do with cigarettes") Amazingly, no colds yet this winter and no coughs either...Could it be that quitting smoking had something to do with it???

Dear Phil,
We are all on our own journey... and each of us is different. We have different priorities, different wants, different needs...
Allow your friend to make his own choices. None of us has the right to make a decision or choice for another...
