Jean, It's VERY common on this site for people to come and then in a flash - POOF! They're gone! Some go back to smoking, but others check in every few months to let us all know that they are fine. So not everyone who leaves is smoking. When I first quit, we had a HUGE group of like 60 of us... now, there are very few Smobers who still post regularly and several others who post every few months to let us know they're still quit. But the rest have disapeared. Yes, it's sad when that happens, because we don't know what happened to them, but we shouldn't get discouraged by it because that's their quits, not ours, and they will quit for good when they are ready (if they did in fact go back to smoking). You know the saying, smart people learn from their own mistakes, but wise people learn from the mistakes of others... and fools just keep making the same mistakes over and over and over again, not realizing that they're even making mistakes at all! I was that fool for a long time until I finally had to learn from my own mistakes in order to quit successfully. But I urge you to be wise... learn from the mistakes of others and don't make them yourself. As many told me on the "If you were to return to smoking..." thread, just because something happens to another person in their quit doesn't mean that it will happen to you. That's good solid thinking. Just concentrate on your OWN quit and let others make the mistakes if they have to in order to eventually be smoke free. I had to make those mistakes for myself, but am smoke free now and that's all that matters! And I know that you will be 700+ days quit someday too! Crave the Quit! Hi Jean I think that there are many of us who are still quit but do not post as often. Like the others, I still like to check in and read posts. Sometimes, I feel that I have something to add but, most of the time, I am out there being a non-smoker. I used to get discouraged when people who had successfully quit, lost their quit and, I have to admit, it scared me. However, for many people, the fall is part of the learning experience. I really admire those people who jump back in and start all over again. Our quits belong to us and nobody else. We need to be careful to protect them. I agree....the support here is amazing. We are a diverse group of people who have many different opinions. Congrats on 50 plus days! Jean49, I know the post you mean, it started quite the controversy. That person, in my opinion, needed some tough love & needed to make their choice. If you read it carefully, it was not a request for help or support. It was excuses and junkie talk. The person did not use the past tense in talking about why they had a "good" reason, which says they still felt it was a good reason. The whole tone of that post was defensive and if that person was truly re-committing & asking for support & guidance, it would have read much differently. If we all thought it was OK to do what that person ws trying to defend, there would be no SSC because we would all be smoking.Of course, everyone can & should react according to what they feel in each situation but I will never offer support or encouragement to anyone who is not trying their best or is only looking for affirmation that there was nothing wrong with what they did. The beauty of this site, & the reason it's so helpful to such a diverse bunch of people is that it is a diverse bunch of people, and everyone is free to take what they need. When I 1st wrote this post I was just taken aback by the one post I had read which was written by someone who lost a 200 day plus quit. It made me wonder.. It made me think... mostly about my own quit. Questions came to my mind, all the what if's for me and as I said originally my own vulnerabilities. I've come to a clear conclusion about all of this - I have come to a point in my life where things are now normalizing for me (personal life stuff etc.) and I'm learning as I go along that this site is so supportive and caring. Yes, sometimes a little tough love and sometimes that's what we might need .. then there's the compassion and the open arms and the shoulder's to lean on. I've learned that my distractions include lots of walking and dieting and balancing that with rest and pampering. We all own our own quits, but the people I've come to know here are so involved in one another's smoke free lives - especially if you let them in. I suppose I was just in a "what if" mode and I have come to the conclusion that we're all human. If ever someone should fall we are here to welcome that person back with open arms, pick them up, get them to dust themselves of (providing that's what they want from us) and get people back on track. I've only joined two other support groups and this one deserves a huge gold medal for all the members, the mod's... It's THE place to be - it is what has been my support line. As laughing said.. humour makes a difference and so does attitude. I embrace both whole heartedly and if anyone out there feels they are falling I implore you to please seek members here to help you through it. hmmmmm.... there are so many ways to feel about these posts... for me.. I know..that without this support group..i don't believe i'll be successful in the long haul... I return to this site..both for positives..when i'm doing well..and..when i feel i might not do as well...or..fear of failure. I'm trying to keep my sense of humor...that's not always easy. keep laughing..as long as you can..that's my motto!!! oh..and don't buy anymore cigarettes. good luck everyone!!! Hi Jean - great job on those 50 days! I read this thread earlier and knew there was something I wanted to say but after reading a similar sentiment in another post, it finally hit me. Two things really. First, not all that leave or fall away from the SSC return to smoking. Some just have to take a little breather because as you continue on in the quit, it begins to become just part of life. Also, some people - like me around 3 months - find that being here makes them think more about smoking than less. The other thing is that although it can be hard to see some people return to smoking, there are a lot of people who will never even try to quit. I really thought I'd be one of those people and I know it was hard on my loved ones to watch me smoke. In a way, those that had long term quits and come here again for help are actually encouraging. They could have never come back. If it were me, I'd be beating myself up pretty badly and it does take courage to come back and start again. They should be given credit for taking a big step forward and asking for help to get them there. I still know people who smoke and they don't shake my conviction to stay quit. I think everything on this site seems a little more magnified because it is such a specific group of people that come here. So when someone smokes after a long time quit, the impact may seem more than it would in the 'real' world that is full of non-smokers, ex-smokers and continuing smokers. I think I stopped making sense a while ago but maybe someone will get something out of this. My main point is that although we should be aware that we are all one cigarette away from being smokers again, we can be the ones who don't. And better yet, the ones who made it and the ones to lend a hand to others who can make it too! Thing is I'm not disheartened, just a little confused about some things. After reading all of your posts I was able to take a little from each and it's absolutely true - Some will fall, get back up and try again - whether it's 1 day or 1,000 days smoke free. And then there are other's who never fall and are a complete inspiration and success story. I know I'm in control of my own quit. No one owns it but me and I have to concentrate on it 100% no matter what life throws at you. All of your responses were incredibly interesting.. thanks for taking the time to post. Jean And yes Bear.. day 50 ! :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 50 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,250 Amount Saved: $512.50 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 16 Mins: 23 Seconds: 28
