Hey Trish, I was wondering how you made out with your tooth extraction. Hope everything is going well. And I know it's hard, but if you need more dental work done, try to do so before things get real bad again!! :)

Just, Im agoraphobic also, I also had an absessed tooth, but it got so bad that swelling went to my neck glands. The dentist advise me to go to the oral surgeon NOW- I was so concerned over the bacteria in my body causing harm, I didnt have time to panic on the trip to the oral surgeon. Like above poster, the tooth is extracted, but Im looking at more periodontal work that needs to be done.
I am afraid of the possible surgery, anesthesia, pain, etc...The most horrible things are running thru my mind (mouth cancer, extensive jaw surgery, death, etc)....
I'm in your boat. I hadn't been to the dentist for about ten years maybe? Until I got an ache that spread all over my left-lower jaw. I took pills for some days, wishing it'd be something minor, until I just COULDN'T sleep, even with four-five pills in me. My girlfriend, luckily, said "Pekka, you realize you HAVE to see a dentist now?" (she knew about my fear of the dentist) And I nodded, feeling so tired due to the lack of sleep and the freaking pain!! She knew a nice dentist, and we drove there the next morning. Tanja (my GF) told the dentist that I'm scared to death etc etc, and they gave me a DIA-PAM(it's a soothing drug here in Europe, you've probably got the same or something exactly similar). I waited for fifteen minutes in HUGE stress, until the pill started working. I felt pretty relaxed...went into the room, she took a look, injected some stuff into my gums...hurt a bit, nothing bad. To make a long story short, I went there three times, she did a root canal in one tooth, was fairly cheap - and I wasn't even nervous the second time there!! This coming from a dude who's had dentist on his mind almost EVERY DAY for the past 10 years!!! Now, I still need LOTS of work done to my chewin' tools, but I'm no longer obsessed with the thought of going to the dentist.

I am so afraid of the dentist, but have been going regularly and it has gotten better...Now I have to see an oral surgeon for a consultation, and for the past few days have been sick with panic and fear..I have never been to one (it is for evaluation of a small lesion on my gum area).....I am afraid of the possible surgery, anesthesia, pain, etc...The most horrible things are running thru my mind (mouth cancer, extensive jaw surgery, death, etc)....I have to call tomm and get an appt....I can barely eat a thing the past few days and have been searching the internet for hours, finding horror stories..Can someone give me any suggestions? I am new to the board and this is my first post..Thank you!!

Wow, you guys would really love it where I live. They don't even use injections unless you beg them too. I also had a terrible problem with a tooth, the dentists kept telling me it was o.k. but I could not sleep for the pain. I went to one dentist who gave me 6 shots and I still had pain. THen I went to a trusted dental hospital, who knew my story and experiences, who said that should never happen, and finally did a root canal with a normal injection that worked. I also stolked up the medication and relaxation herbs before I went, and took lots of pain killer before and after. They finally got the job done! I have always been terrified of dentists, but this was the worst. When I was young, I was afraid to go to male dentists, (I am a female) for fear of blushing to add to the rest.

I waited 3 years before I finally went to the dentist, (a couple of months ago). The pain was so bad, it kept me awake, and I ate Tylenol constantly. My dentist told me to take one valium the night before, and two valium an hour before my appointment. That did nothing for me. He gave me two or three shots and I still had feeling. I screamed and about jumped out of the chair! Scared my dentist too!! He sent me to an oral surgeon to have the tooth pulled, and I paid for the IV sedation. Well worth the $225. It was over quickly and I never knew a thing. Some dentists will do that for any procedure but most insurances don't cover it. Good luck! Cristian

I AM SO AFRAID OF GOING TO THE DENTIST THAT I ACTUALLY HAVE CHEST PAIN. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE I HAD AN ALLERGY TO THE NOVACAINE OR SOMETHING BUT COME TO FIND OUT I HAVE THIS PANIC DISORDER. IT JUST SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE LIKE YOU SAY. I AM NEW TO THIS GROUP AND I AM NOT SURE WHAT I AM TO DO NOW BUT I SURE HOPE SOMETHING COMES UP BECAUSE IT IS RUINING MY LIFE GOOD. ROBERTA

I would rather do just about anything than go to the dentist! Fortunately, my dentist knows that I'm VERY uncomfortable being there, and I think he works as fast as he can to get me in and out! I also usually take a .5 mg of Xanax before I go, which really helps. You're not alone mudslinger! ;)

i hate going to the dentist. a healthy fear as weknow that it can REALLY hurt. i try to be relaxed but i squeeze my eyes shut and my hands tight together...one dentist here gives 5mg valium before if you want it!
