That is an excellent point, SammiJoFl. My first quit was twenty some years ago & lasted about 8 months. It was pretty easy & like BFS, I didn't see starting again as such a big deal because I thought I could quit again if I wanted to. That's what I get for thinking! I always assumed it was easier because I was younger but this puts a new spin on it. You can thank the FDA for that. There are no federal laws about what goes into cigarettes, but there is for dog food. A few years ago a congress man (or somebody very important) tried to stop the insanity and he lost his job real quick. HUMMMMM..... It is all about money. Who is going to fight it? Wow Sammi! I'm in awe at your logic skills and am amazed that this never really occured to me or anybody else here. I've never read that theory before, but you're right! I think that probably does have something to do with it. I too quit once for about 10 months when I was 20 (had only smoked for about 2 1/2 years) and I also simply just put them down and never even wanted one after the first 3 days. How stupid I was to take them back up again! But part of the reason why I did was because it was SO easy to put them down, that I figured it would ALWAYS be that wasy... but then when I tried to quit again after having picked them back up again, I realized how difficult it really was. I figured the difference was simply because I hadn't smoked for that long when I'd quit for 10 months and therefore, wasn't as addicted as I was later. But now, I have to say that I think you're on to something with your theory because cigarettes ARE much more addictive now than they were many years ago. Awesome thinking Sammi! It's great to have you back! Crave the Quit! This just occurred to me. I was reading another thread and a very bright lady (hi Lainey!) had posted that her husband quit smoking 32 years ago. She said he was tolerant but that he really did not understand what she was going through. I realized that this was not the first time I'd read that sentence, or one like it... My husband/wife/brother/sister/uncle/aunt/friend quit smoking 15/20/25/30 years ago, and just walked away from it cold turkey and never looked back, and he/she really doesn't understand why I've had such a hard time quitting. Suddenly it occurred to me... OF COURSE!! Much has been written lately about how the cigarette manufacturers have, over the years, perfected the addictive quality of their product, utilizing a multitude of additives to ensure that each smoker stays a smoker. TWENTY OR THIRTY YEARS AGO IT WAS EASIER TO QUIT. The manufacturing process was not nearly as complex, nor were the cigarettes tainted with so many additives. Goodness, I don't know why this never occurred to me before. NO WONDER the smokers of years ago are perplexed by the level of quit difficulty for today's smokers!
