Should I Believe ??

Wow, memories came flooding back... taking my Mom's leftover butts that weren't completely smoked, and going down into the basement and "teaching" myself to smoke them. After a while I bought a pack, but then someone told me I wasn't really smoking since I didn't inhale them. So I watched my mom to see what they meant, and I headed back to the basement to learn how to inhale (and choke, and inhale, and choke) But I learned! Then I practiced for another 40+ years. How smart I was! A few years ago I decided to quit...and was semi-successful for several months. I thought I could be a "social smoker" but I couldn't teach myself to do that. This time, I quit, no social smoking. I learned new skills, and thanks to this site and the wonderful people here I took the time to notice all of the benefits of quitting. I am learning to live again, without the addiction. It's a wonderful feeling. I think I'll practice this for the rest of my life. I wasn't convinced to smoke, i remember having to try pretty hard for my lungs time to accept smoke inhalation. Quitting is just the reverse, try hard & ye shall succeed. You have to want it first. No amount of advertising could make me quit. (I just changed the channel or muted it or went to the bathroom) No amount of snickers or sneers or "cute" comments from well meaning non-smokers could make me quit (I had a come back for every single one of their comments). No amount of doctors who told me that quitting would kill me or the fact that I was on SEVEN different medications for my breathing at 28 years of age could make me quit... until I was ready. Can smokers be convinced to quit? Not until they're ready to listen. Until then, we're just wasting our breaths. Crave the Quit! YES advertising.....conformity...acceptance and popularity can enable anyone to do most anything. If our "idols" REALLY...REALLY....REALLY....REALLY... got behind the anit-smoking cause (and you all know who they are. Everyone one from Brad Pitt...to Paris Hilton...and half the NFL)....smoking would be a "has been" in a couple of years. And that's the truth.
