I slipped and I'm afraid

Mamakitty, I can't apologize enough for not seeing this sooner. I know how you feel and it is a yucky feeling. I can't give you a number of how many times I tried to quit. That's how many it is. But....all those failures brought me to this quit. I know in my heart I will make it. And.and...and.... I owe it in part from learning from my past failures. Failures aren't always bad. Very often they are the very means that's used to make things better. Soooooo, take your negative and make it positive. Your doing a wonderful job. Enjoy your vacation. Remember.... there is nothing you give up...but cigarettes. Your not asked to do anything else....but not smoke. mamakitty I'm so glad so many of our fellow quitters responded to you. As you can see, nobody has a bad opinion of you because you slipped. We all understand how easy it is to do that, and how hard it can be to resist the temptation when we are feeling low/uncomfortable. I am so glad your family suggested you come on here. What an awesome support network you have! So, how are you today? How many more days in Italy? And, I agree with Todash. tobacco makes yucky potpourri. Do you think it might be a good idea to ask someone in the family to retrieve it when you get back to Paris? Danielle always has such good suggestions....a journal exploring your emotions while you're learning how to handle them without smoking. I think maybe I should start doing that too :) OK, onwards, right??? We're all pulling for you -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 117 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,680 Amount Saved: $795.60 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 10 Mins: 18 Seconds: 46

Mama Kitty, So sorry to hear about your slip... and on vacation too! Vacations are VERY tough for many of us because we're in unfamiliar territory. For me, when I was ever in an unfamiliar place, I always smoked more because cigarettes were my shield that I hid behind. So I can identify. But it sounds to me like you WANT to be smoke free... you just want to already be to the comfortable place that so many talk about and don't want to go through the "hell" that is quitting. Well my dear, very few good things come without a fight or without sacrifice. The more we have to fight for something, the more we appreciate it when we finally do get it. It sounds like you have a very loving and supportive family who wants you to be healthy and alive for them years and years and years from now. What do you want? As for not stopping because you can always press play again, the problem with that is that we CAN NOT be social smokers. We can't. We're not hard-wired that way. Social smokers have a genetic defect that allows them to smoke every once in a while and then not smoke again for several days, weeks, or even months without feeling the effects of withdrawals. We don't have that gene! So, it's either eject the movie from the VCR or play it until it's done... but the movie might be a whole lot shorter than you'd like it to be. Sorry... it's the truth. Crave the Quit! Exactly right, Danielle. Exactly right! Mamakitty, at 36 days most quitters are in pretty tough territory. You've been fighting the good fight for what feels like a long time. You're fatigued and it's difficult to stay enthused and optimistic. At that point in my quit, I spent A LOT of time here, reading... immersed in the solutions, thinking about the new life I was trying to get comfortable with. I was trying to make it real, and at times I just felt like I was running out of steam. I really leaned on this place then. Much more than I do now. Mamakitty, you'll be just fine. Don't make more of this than is there. Use the slip to your advantage and you'll be better equipped as you jump back on the horse. You can only fail if you stop trying. Don't stop trying. :) Insist on ultimate success. Mamakitty, You slipped. It happens. Do not beat yourself up, it won't solve anything and you don't deserve it! We would encourage you to learn from this experience. If emotions are your biggest triggers, you need to confront this problem head on or it will keep coming back to haunt you. Instead of hiding from your emotions, start acknowledging them. Many members have used a journal to do this. You'll still have the privacy you need but a safe place to explore your emotions. Lastly, enjoy your vacation! Plenty of opportunities to reward yourself for getting back to your quit! Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist
