I'm Burning Bridges Everywhere

I think you ought to be proud of yourself. I think that is one of the best things about my quit. I have been REAL honest with people about how I am feeling and at times it is not what they want to hear. However, when I was a smoker I would put it off...(well I will deal with it after this cig) or I would not face it..(go outside and smoke instead). I feel like for the first time I am really doing and saying the things I need to so I can advocate for myself. There is nothing wrong with making yourself a priority whether you are quitting or not. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hey Audrey, Im not seeing any clues in your note that leads me to believe that you in any way acted unnaturally. Whether I smoke or not, I would not appreciate a neighbor dumping a weeks worth of pet care on me, giving me one days noticed; owed him or not. This is an added burden on you, very little notice, and you have to fit it in your schedule. One needs time to plan and assimilate the extra chores. I think the neighbor was inconsiderate unless it was an emergency situation for him. And so your brother didnt stop by to see you, well, if you love your brother and sounds so, of course you would feel let down. These feelings are normal and I dont understand how smoking helped you to mask these feelings at all. In fact I will venture to say that you are acting more normal now, now that you dont smoke. So keep that big beautiful six month quit. You worked hard and soon you will be big and strong just like me. Do not be burning any bridges with a lit cigarette. Hopes this helps. Audrey, Quitting is very trying and still can be even after six months. There were several times early in my quit when I had to put my attitude in check. Being quit means learning to live without the smoking and learning to deal with emotions, routines, relationships, and ourselves. You talk of burning bridges. You can also build bridges. Take a few moments to think before you react and look at what it is that is really upsetting you. Do you resent quitting? I use to get so mad at my dad because he still smoked. I hated the smell, the teasing, about being quit, and the sound of his coughing. What I was really mad about was that he was smoking and I wasn't. It wasn't fair! I wanted to smoke but I chose not to. I realized that I was the lucky one. I was the one who had fought for the quit and was winning the battle. My perspective changed and I wasn't as angry anymore once I realized what was really going on. I have often said that quitting is a soul searching, life changing experience. Perhaps there is some soul searching needed here. I may be way off base here. Take what you want and leave the rest. Sue, I do focus on my quit. It is number one, unfortunately sometimes. My family's pretty tight and should be able to handle a dose of how I really feel. Why should I have to keep that all pent up? I didn't do anything and I was mad, so he shall know it. Got a back up on the pet care. That story is a lot more involved than I told. Bottom line: They hardly ever had to help me out and more and more, with less and less notice I was being called on. I am just a little too convenient. Your pets are lonely...get a plan. Audrey PS: Your kitty looks like a kitty I once knew called "Topsy" My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/16/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 189 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,780 Amount Saved: $529.20 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 11 Mins: 32 Seconds: 47

Audrey I hear ya. I did some damage with some of my family too. I am being selfish and protecting my quit at all costs. If they don't like it tough. They hated for years that I smoked around them I reckon they can handle some *****iness for a bit. I am sure when we come out the other side we will be better healthier people Audrey. My family does that not calling, heard they were in town thing after, etc...too. Really irritates me. I tell them too. don't worry about them, just focus on your quit. I am sure our loving bubbly personalities will resurface one of these days ;p Sue My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 820 Amount Saved: $143.50 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 20 Mins: 49 Seconds: 44

You know I read and hear that I am not alone with the discovery of emotion with quitting. That we no longer hide, that we face ourselves and all that we used to escape from by smoking. I am burning bridges left and right people! I never used to cause a ripple. I got huffy with a neighbor the other day whom I thought was calling to thank me but instead dumped a weeks worth of pet care on me with only one day's notice. They took care of my pets and although I felt I was starting to bear the brunt I think that relationship is over. My brother just came to town with his family and didn't visit me or call. Although we just saw each other in May I felt jaded and pissed. Here's the email: Hi Doug, Ya know, I didn't want a big ordeal of a visit either since we just saw each other in May, but it would have been nice if you had wanted to get together for a drink. Aud Folks, I am not holding back and as good as you might tell me it is, it is bad! Family and neighborhood bridges burned so far. Can't afford to tell it like I feel at work!!! I have posted before about identity, who is this person, etc. I love and am proud that I am six months quit, but no man is an island :( I want the old personality back without the smokes. I guess this is impossible. I'm am changing all these things in my life also...for the healthier. Don't get me wrong, I'm no where near being an island, but I don't like causing waves where there were never any before.
