Sorry I haven't been around, real busy this week-end. We have been though more quits and relapese than I care to count. Now I see it that everytime you go off the patch the craves return, right? Well when you go off the pactch you are in withdrawal from nicotine. I think Phil can address this better than I can. He went though heck when he came off the patches. Phil used the gum for a short time to help him though it. But he and others will tell you the quit is yours to keep or to give away. It has taken me so long to get to where I am today, I just don't want to this over again. I know you know how to quit :) For me when that monster was trying to get hold of me I would use any excuse to smoke. I didn't care what it was as long as I could get that smoke. I have had to learn how to act instead of reacting. Reacting gets me no where fast. I now slow down and think what is it that I am giving up? What would a smoke do for me today? Who is it that I am really hurting by smoking? Does smoking really help solve any problem? I am sure you can add your own. I am so glad you are back. All you have to do is not smoke today; let tomorrow take care of itself. Keep the Quit Sparky PS I am a Leo :p My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 75 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 750 Amount Saved: $225.00 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 4 Mins: 59 Seconds: 27

Penguin dear, you are so strong. Call on that strength to get through each hour and each day. As Sparky always reminds us, one day at a time. Penguin, It sounds like you're really taking the time to examine your slip and to learn from each crave! Being quick to anger is fairly common among new quitters. Have you ever given any thought keeping track of this also? Taking note of the reactions you are having, your thoughts and actions may allow you to see where your patterns lie. From there, you can start practicing a set out reaction you've chosen that allows you to be assertive but not aggressive in the face of these triggers. Hope this helps. Hey, penguin. This is a hard thing & you're at the hardest part of it. You're doing the right thing, giving yourself what you need to get a good start. I'm glad your husband is supportive for you, I'm sure that makes a big difference. I understand about the anger, it's a big trigger for me too & I am also learning how to feel it & react to it. It's a tough one, it's scary & uncomfortable. But you have what it takes, penguin, I know you do & I know you can do it. You know where to find me if you need me. I think you are asking why I relapsed? There is a post by Lainey I think about the phases of quitting...have you read it. There is a section that talks about bargaining. I was going through that phase I believe. I had been having a lot of thoughts of going back to smoking...trying to push them away. I had a lot of thoughts of just how long it was going to take to stop thinking about it all the time. I stopped using the support from this site and my on-line friends. A misunderstanding with hubby was the turning point for me to be VICTIM - the excuse. Feeling like a victim is a hard one for me to get through. It is difficult to explain, but for me, rather than someone hurting me (eg misunderstanding with hubby) I would rather it be me hurting me (eg smoking). Doesn't hurt as much. Don't know if that make sense, but that is how it went. Anger is a big trigger for me. It is like I become insane, can't think clearly, make assumptions, I react inappropriately. As much as quitting smoking has made me less angry, less frustrating, less inpatient, I still have those moments and it is those moments that I need to always be guarded about. The last two times I have quit using the patch, and almost immediately (within a week) of going off them, the craves come. I don't really think I had craves when I was using the patch, and I'm not really sure I know how to deal with them. So I have learned something. Instead of just ignoring the thoughts I am having, I am taking more time with them, thinking it through, developing some coping mechanisms, so that I am more prepared. I will definately be posting more here, and for as long as it takes. If it takes forever, then so be it.
