The sure sign of a hopeless case

Alright.....ready???? NO.... I mean ready??? Remember, I was a closet smoker for years. I had a boyfriend at the time that was HUGE ANTI SMOKING ADVOCATE. Everytime I got caught he would break up with me until I begged for mercy (excuse the pun)to forgive me. Well.... I was at this big amusement park. I'm too chicken to go on those scary rides. There was a very long line on the parks new scary roller coaster. He and some friends got in the long line. They had an estimate wait time posted on a beam. Ahhhh... freedom for a good 20 minutes...even more. That triggered the "sneak and smoke drama". I had remembered seeing a gag gift at one of the gift shops. It was a cigarette incased in a glass cylinder and it was called some silly name.....like "emergency kit". I even remembered it cost a dollar! At the time that was outragous. As soon as I left them all in line I began to get IBS over the thought of a cigarette. I made a mad dash trying to find the gift store I had seen it. It was to be the PERFECT SMOKE and the perfect way to have one. I didn't even have to buy a whole pack to have one. This gag gift came with just the one cigarette incased in glass. Much to my excitement I found it. Things were working out just as I planed till I realized..... I didn't have a match!! Back in the days it wasn't too hard to get one. Smoking was permited in most places. Off I franticaly ran to find an amusement park resturant to bum a pack of matches. Whew.....found them!! Now.... time is running short. I still had to find a secret place to smoke it and have sufficient time to air the smell off of me and buy something to eat to change the taste in my mouth. I found the perfect spot. The always available womans room stall. How lucky could I be..... I even got one on the end. By this time I'm pretty much knotted up with excitement on FINALLY HAVING A SMOKE. But....but...but... I could't break the glass cylinder the gag cigarette was in. I tried to pinch it....snap it... twist it. There was no opening. It truly was a sealed gag souvenier gift. The situation is not good....I'm really cutting it close by now. Time for sneaking smokes was always crucial as you needed an alloted period to air out. I had heart palpatations from wanting this cigarette so bad. So....I put it on the floor and stomped it with my foot to break the glass. Ahhhhhh success..... till I picked it up off the floor and saw the cigarette paper got all riped from the glass. Now...... how many people do you know that would go to those kinds of lengths to get ONE SMOKE IN SECRET!! That's why you see a picture of a goat and not my face on this web site. I mean.... would you show your face if it was you? You want to talk about pathetic? Picture being the bright old age of 20 in a big city, no job, no family (but a roof over your head). You are married, have a baby, and not much more than that going for you. Take your infant to the park while everyone is at work so you can ask passerby's if they can spare a cigarette? However, you wouldn't ever go to a place like public assistance because afterall, you don't need any handouts and you do have your pride! Times were just a little tough getting going. So much learned that when that same baby is 2 she eats jelly sandwiches or mac and cheese for dinner because you can't afford much else. However, you aren't ever out of smokes. And to think... I had no idea I was an addict! This is about how I paid for my cigs but this is pathetic...I never told my dad I smoked...he thinks smoking is one of the stupiest things anyone can ever do (I agree now). I didn't start smoking until I was 19 and not living with him? So why hide it? Pathetic. Or how about I would say I'm quitting Monday...well then in the mail I would get wonderful buy one get one free or $xx amount off a pack/carton coupons from Marlboro...so I had to use those before I could quit. If I would have just quit I would have saved a lot more than what I saved with the damn coupons. I've done that exact thing, Janna, only it was more like $60 a week. I have taken money out of my kids' piggy banks, more than once, to buy smokes! Going to the pub cigarette machine and paying 5.60 instead of 4.20 at the shop next door because you cannot smoke in the shop. That was me.
