A DRUGGED OUT SOCIETY?

Rusty I understand your position completely. As a parent I would do whatever it took to look after my kids.I still place drug companys in the same catagorey as the tobacco co.I'm reluctant to point this out but I recently watched a program on excongressmen who were taking jobs with pharmacutical companies at enormus salarys so that they would loby the congress into pasing drug bills that was going to cost billions of dollars to implament My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 154 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,772 Amount Saved: $1,540.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 5 Mins: 3 Seconds: 48

No doubt medication is over perscribed in the U.S. and especially to the elder. When I first was advised by my Doctor to quit smoking it was because he had a new medication to help. (not that he didn't think I needed to quit before but he never mentioned it until he had samples to hand out) Wellbutrin,Zyban and now Chantix. Most of this stuff is just as expensive as smoking. Lets hope we don't find out later it is just as costly in the long run. Mister Ed different strokes for different folks ;p Heroin got the nickname horse as a result of a few enterprising horsemen discovering that if you gave a horse a small shot on race day this baby would run his heart out for a week and many of them did right into a heart attach. :gasp: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 154 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,772 Amount Saved: $1,540.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 5 Mins: 0 Seconds: 43

Interesting point, Duffis. Of course, the main legal drug of choice, alcohol, which in my opinion is the lead cause of selfish, aggressive, stupid, maniacal behavior is ignored thus far in this conversation. Add that to the mixture of legal and illegal drugs mentioned here and then you have a really bad situation on the street and in the boardroom. :gasp: My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 549 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 21,960 Amount Saved: $4,941.00 Life Gained: Days: 90 Hrs: 22 Mins: 0 Seconds: 14

A couple of our better known 'pop stars' in the UK have recently confessed to taking / been found in possession of Ketamine. KETAMINE? Do you know what this is? Hi Bear, I don't think the mods will shut this down...certainly depression can be a side-effect of quitting smoking. I was fortunate not to have to go on medication, but I did go to counseling for quite a while to deal with my anger and other emotions that accompanied my quit. One thing I have learned from my son and other folks I am close to is that oftentimes it isn't enough to "learn to deal with it." To be able to get up in the morning and get dressed, to be able to go through a day without crying, to be able to get the kind of help we need when we need it...these are very precious. I don't begrudge anyone doing what they need to do to protect themselves. Ah duffis won't mind if we hijack his thread. The mods are probably going to shut us down anyhow. :)The only reason I ask Lady is because I have a huge enormous mistrust for business period.I understand that there are people who have chemical imbalances in fact I may be one of them.I tend towards manic depression and have for years.I have never been diagnosed but have done enough research to be suspicious.Over the years I have learned to deal with it without meds. Could I been better with them ??? But a lot of the side effects put me off.I take 1 pill a day now for a thyroid problem. Lady knows that my son suffers from depression, and has been recently diagnosed as borderline bipolar. If it were not for medications he takes, he would not be able to function. I've seen him try to go without, and it isn't pretty. So yes, I think that a lot of people take medications they don't need, but some people need the medications they take. I am grateful that they are available. Bear, Yes, I still take the meds. Each time I think I'm ready to come off of them and we try, I wind up right back on them because I head straight for that downward spiral. I suppose it really is one of those things that smoking masked. I went 1.5 years into my quit without the meds. It was not pretty. I was so embarrassed when they put me on the meds that I actually left the site for a while. Several members had suggested I talk to my doctor and I refused. Once I did and found they were right, I was ashamed. It is still hard for me to accept the fact that these meds help me function. I want to get off of them as soon as possible. I go to the doctor every 3 months and work with a counselor as well. Neither think coming off of the meds is a good idea for me. Does that bother me? You bet it does. But then I think of the alternative. (sorry to hijak your thread Duffis) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 781 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 15,620 Amount Saved: $2,733.50 Life Gained: Days: 70 Hrs: 12 Mins: 53 Seconds: 47
