Duffis,
I don't think the anti-depressants are used to help us get over smoking or to ease the pain of withdrawal. As you know, I was quite depressed for over a year before I sought help from my doctor. I was also devastated when he put me on an anti-depressant. We discussed this at great length. This wasn't to ease the quit, but something I needed in order to deal with life. I am a better person today for it. The medication combined with counseling helped me to get my life on track for the first time ever. I am more in control now than I have ever been.
Did I take the easy way out? You were there, my friend. Many late nights, you had me on Yahoo helping me through when I thought that smoking was my only solution. Remember? I said I would rather go back to smoking than to continue to feel the way I did. I don't think I took the easy way out. I struggled and went through hell holding on to my quit with everything I had.
I agree that the pain medication is over prescribed. My doctor is very hesitant on giving out medication. That is why I like him so much. When he prescribes something for me, I believe it to be something that will help me. I agree with Rusty, we are responsible as well. We need to educate ourselves on what we take and the affects drugs have.
Just my opinion. Take what you want and leave the rest.
