Duffis, I don't think the anti-depressants are used to help us get over smoking or to ease the pain of withdrawal. As you know, I was quite depressed for over a year before I sought help from my doctor. I was also devastated when he put me on an anti-depressant. We discussed this at great length. This wasn't to ease the quit, but something I needed in order to deal with life. I am a better person today for it. The medication combined with counseling helped me to get my life on track for the first time ever. I am more in control now than I have ever been. Did I take the easy way out? You were there, my friend. Many late nights, you had me on Yahoo helping me through when I thought that smoking was my only solution. Remember? I said I would rather go back to smoking than to continue to feel the way I did. I don't think I took the easy way out. I struggled and went through hell holding on to my quit with everything I had. I agree that the pain medication is over prescribed. My doctor is very hesitant on giving out medication. That is why I like him so much. When he prescribes something for me, I believe it to be something that will help me. I agree with Rusty, we are responsible as well. We need to educate ourselves on what we take and the affects drugs have. Just my opinion. Take what you want and leave the rest. I heard this story on NPR yesterday, Duffis. Seems as though the biggest craze in drug use among teenagers is stealing their parents' prescriptions, dumping them all in a bag, and then passing the bag around. No one knows what they're taking. I agree that Big Pharma is much to blame for this, along with doctors willing to play along. But each of us is responsible too, for our own health care decisions. However, I am also so grateful for the medicines we have that help so many people cope with pain, illness and mental disorders. Hi Duffis, I'll go look but off the top of my head I would think our trend is the same as yours. We're human too over here (really!) and subject to the same pressures of the pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession in general. I've lost count of the number of prescriptions that I have failed to cash because they were unnecessary not to mention the ones that I did but didn't need. Come look in my medicine cabinet!! They all end up down the pan! Must admit that since I've been with my "Super Quit Buddy, I have become a little partial to the odd Advil ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1190 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 23,800 Amount Saved: 5,950.00 Life Gained: Days: 191 Hrs: 3 Mins: 21 Seconds: 5

This mornings newspaper has an Associated Press article and while enjoying my coffee I started reading. Good God in Heaven the United States has increased pain medication by 88 percent in 9 years. Retail sales of five leading pain killers nearly doubled in use by patients nationwide who are living in a world of pain, this is based on prescription data and not the "street drugs". In that vain a government study estimated between 2 million and 3 million doses of codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone are stolen annually from pharmacies, distributors and drug manufactures. I remember when the pit bull attacked my and my doggie, I got tore up pretty bad the first thing the MD's did was write a prescription for Vicodin, I hurt but not that bad that aspirin could not have handled. Even the Vet put my Foxie on Rimadyl for pain. Now we come to dealing with nicotine withdrawl and the drugs used in this area. Cold turkey, NRT, anti-depressents and just about anything to ease the pain of quitting the cigs. I guess it has come down to just take the easy way out and use the drugs for a lot of people in this country. Pen are there any stats in the UK or EU? Kindest to all Duffis My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 919 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 27,570 Amount Saved: $3,216.50 Life Gained: Days: 199 Hrs: 3 Mins: 29 Seconds: 37
