A DRUGGED OUT SOCIETY?

Hey, Rusty! I tutor ESL, too! Not all the time, kind of on & off over a number of years now. It's very rewarding & I've made some good friends, too. What an interesting thread this has turned out to be! Wow! Lady, something you said struck a nerve:
We can all sit around and talk about how bad society is today but what are "we" as individuals doing about it?
How many folks are volunteering or reaching out to change what they see is wrong or missing in society? I've been a literacy tutor for a number of years, and it makes me nuts when people gripe about immigrants not speaking English, and yet...ANYONE CAN BE AN ENGLISH TUTOR. All you have to do is know the English language. Anyone can volunteer to go to your local hospital and rock the babies who are born addicted to crack. Anyone can do what you are doing, Lady...working with kids to show them a better way. All that time we are saving by not smoking? We could be doing something productive and constructive instead of complaining about society's ills. As Lady said:
I may not be able to make a difference in the world but I CAN do my best to make a difference in the world I live in.
Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 983 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 27,524 Amount Saved: $3,440.50 Life Gained: Days: 138 Hrs: 16 Mins: 43 Seconds: 35

hmm....I, too, mourn the fact that my grandkids won't have the freedom to roam that I did, and that my kids kind of did. I think us condemning too busy parents, tho, is a bit simplistic. For many parents these days it is not a choice to have both parents working, often it is a necessity. And not to buy the latest game system, designer clothes, but to pay the rent, let alone mortgage, to buy food, pay for health insurance, and buy gas. I work with families every day, and some are as described, too busy to be bothered with their "pesky" kids, but in my experience they are the minority. Most families are working very hard, and many just to hold their heads above water financially, and are trying their damnedest to raise healthy, morally good children. But, like a few of you have said, we are all so isolated that it is more diffiult for each individual family to provide everything needed for their children. What is really striking to me is what seems like the higher incidence of "mental disorders" in children. I don't know if it because ADHD, autism, and mood disorders are identified earlier, or if there is something in our environment, or our lifestyles, or a combination, that is contributing to this, but there sure seems to be a lot of problems for kids these days. And that is even before you add in the scourge of drug addiction- kids exposed before they're born, in their homes. ok, just my 4 cents. pokerbrat, pete & Lady, you are all so right about how our world has changed and how our attitudes have become so self-centred and materialistic. I lay it all at the feet of the double front drive garage! Really, I do. People used to know their neighbours & their neighbourhood. Any parent could feed or discipline any child or make them help carry in groceries. Now, everyone lives in their protected little bubble and they don't care to know anything beyond their garage doors. There is distrust & misunderstanding where there used to be friendliness and tolerance. It's all because of double front drive garages! Of course people still care!!!!!! One of the amazing things this site made me realize is that there are good, kind, caring people all over this world of ours. I met a lot of them here! I care... I work with my children and then I have my "kids" that I work with. I am getting ready to work with a new group of kids. Where I was living I worked with about 15 teens on a continous basis. Kids from the projects and kids from the suburbs that just needed some guidence in life. Now I am getting ready to work with a group of 32 teens in the Atlanta area. I have no idea what I'm getting myself into here but I have already met a handful of these kids. Someone has got to show these children that there is value in our world and that there is something to live for. Someone has to be an example to them. So many parents are caught up in their own addictions that they forget all about the kids that they brought into this world. I have met several kids that think that way of living is just the way it is. I have also seen a few break away from a unproductive life style, go on to college and become successful people begin families of their own. I have also seen a mother of three at the age of 19 go back to school and get her GED and go on to college because someone gave her what she needed to believe in herself. It is our obligation, our God given right and OBLIGATION, to give a "Hand UP" to those less fortunate than us. We are all family. We are all brothers and sisters. I may not be able to make a difference in the world but I CAN do my best to make a difference in the world I live in. That is why I am here and that is why I do volunteer work with these teens. It is my passion. True a lot of parents could care less about their kids for a variety of reasons. We can all sit around and talk about how bad society is today but what are "we" as individuals doing about it? Like the song says "It only takes a spark to get a fire going". I teach these kids about alcoholism and how it affected my family both as a child and as an adult. Just because we are raised with it doesn't mean we have to live with it forever. I also teach them about the smoking addiction and what it did to my life. The time to help is BEFORE the addiction is created. I have a connection with the teens because I am "real" with them. I am also there for them. Any one of them knows they can call me day or night. Just as some on this site know they can call me day or night and I will do my best to help in any way I can. There goes that long winded Lady again  Sorry...like I said, this is my passion in life. pokerbrat wow you have nailed a great big part of this whold theme. i remember playing kick the can, hide and seek all the fun street games and we stayed out playing until mom or dad came and called us in. We didn't have much...........no HD, ten TVs in the house, a 3 party phone line. All we had is each other my brothers, mom and dad it was something else in those days. If another boy even looked sideways at me my brothers would beat the crap out of him. It was family all the way. While times have changed, you have to look at all that has been tossed at us since world war II. Talk about progress, the advances in science, medicine and the tecno world. We can do all of these modern marvels, yet our children are pushed aside for the want of a better life. Day care, who is really in control of oub babies? Working 3 jobs, mom working to support the life style that is really just an illusion anyway. Somehow we have to regain control of ourselves and get a grip on the real values that made us all great. I am just babbling along here trying to do something........what I'm not sure but double darn it am I finally loosing it or does someone really care about who we are and what we stand for. Very interesting debate, I suppose I might as well throw in my 2 cents. The way I see it, it is a drugged out society we live in, mainly due to advertising pressures, greed, and more greed...did I mention greed? Think about it, a commercial on TV telling you if your having problems sleeping, see your doctor and I quote, "ask about Lunesta". The commercial is telling you to go ask your doctor for a drug, not get his opinion on what might be the matter with you. And whats up with that name?? Lunesta???? Ok, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but Lunesta? COME ON!! Lunesta....LUNAR...night time....NESTA....nest...bed...safe...give me a break. I have no problem with folks using meds if they feel they need them, I have a son, 15 years old who is bipolar, believe me he has to take a cocktail of meds everyday. Without them, he wouldn't be able to function. His mother is also bipolar, so he gets it honest. The only reason she is alive right now is because of her meds. So some of it falls on personal responsibility, which I have seen a lot of people say in this post. Now let's address something else I haven't read yet. The world we live in today. It isn't the same world I remember as a 10 year old. Life today is faster, more complex, more stressful. Everyday is 100 miles an hour, no time for this, no time for that. Companies are demanding more time from employees, with less benefits, less money. Taxes never stop rising, prices are subject to might what happen in the future now as opposed to what IS happening..for example gas. It truly is a world gone mad, and I feel a majority of people who cannot cope, and are vulnerable to stress, find relief with drugs. For example my 2nd ex-wife, we had a 5 shelf bookshelf in a walk-in closet that was there just for meds. You practically have to force me to swallow an asprin, but her...she thought the answer to everything was in a pill. So there again, personal responsibility. All I know is I'm glad the meds are there for the people who need them, for the ones abusing them, we all know what road they will be going down, the road of addiction and withdrawl. All I can do for me is not watch the news, not read the newspaper, live my life as peacefully as I can, and keep trying to flop straight flushes..haha Peace to all of you, no matter which path you choose. I think this has been a great debate!!!! We haven't had one around here in a long time. It is the diversity of this group that makes this place so awesome. I also agree with you Duffis, that many have forgotten to teach their children well. In the short time I have been here (new area), I see I am around a lot more people that DO teach their children. That will make my job a lot easier. It does take a village. Hopefully my children will understand enough about addiction to stay far away from it. One can only hope.
