Very interesting debate, I suppose I might as well throw in my 2 cents.
The way I see it, it is a drugged out society we live in, mainly due to advertising pressures, greed, and more greed...did I mention greed? Think about it, a commercial on TV telling you if your having problems sleeping, see your doctor and I quote, "ask about Lunesta". The commercial is telling you to go ask your doctor for a drug, not get his opinion on what might be the matter with you. And whats up with that name?? Lunesta???? Ok, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but Lunesta? COME ON!! Lunesta....LUNAR...night time....NESTA....nest...bed...safe...give me a break.
I have no problem with folks using meds if they feel they need them, I have a son, 15 years old who is bipolar, believe me he has to take a cocktail of meds everyday. Without them, he wouldn't be able to function. His mother is also bipolar, so he gets it honest. The only reason she is alive right now is because of her meds. So some of it falls on personal responsibility, which I have seen a lot of people say in this post.
Now let's address something else I haven't read yet. The world we live in today. It isn't the same world I remember as a 10 year old. Life today is faster, more complex, more stressful. Everyday is 100 miles an hour, no time for this, no time for that. Companies are demanding more time from employees, with less benefits, less money. Taxes never stop rising, prices are subject to might what happen in the future now as opposed to what IS happening..for example gas. It truly is a world gone mad, and I feel a majority of people who cannot cope, and are vulnerable to stress, find relief with drugs. For example my 2nd ex-wife, we had a 5 shelf bookshelf in a walk-in closet that was there just for meds. You practically have to force me to swallow an asprin, but her...she thought the answer to everything was in a pill. So there again, personal responsibility.
All I know is I'm glad the meds are there for the people who need them, for the ones abusing them, we all know what road they will be going down, the road of addiction and withdrawl. All I can do for me is not watch the news, not read the newspaper, live my life as peacefully as I can, and keep trying to flop straight flushes..haha
Peace to all of you, no matter which path you choose.
