Hello New me, I'm glad I was wrong, you're doing great. The statement I was referring to was: "Using cigs as a small reward (it is the addiction we got to feed), gave me something to look forward to every hour, every two hours. Now, after 30 years, wow! Maybe that is where some of the quitting depression comes from. I feel that I have nothing to look forward to. Even so, I know that is an after effect of using nicotine for so long. I am glad to be smoke free, inspite of myself!" Hi Tom, I really don't understand where you got the idea that I still thought smoking was a positive thing?? This post is about time distortion and cravings/rewards. Thanks Windy, Yeap, compared to hell week, this is not sooo bad. I know the heightened anxiety is from coming off of the lozenges. I feel better this am and am getting ready to face another work day. I got a new book as a reward. I get numerous breaks throughout the day at my job and enjoy reading on my breaks. New me, I was a little puzzled by your post. You're doing so great with nearly 100 days behind you and you still consider smoking as a positive thing. That sounds like the junky talking. No one but the junky could consider smoking a positive thing. I used to live in a place where the winters were severe. I welcomed negative single digit temperatures, they felt so good in comparison. When you were just at negative 57 degrees F, negative 5 feels real good and 20 degrees feels like summer. What person in their right mind would consider negative anything a comfortable temperature? Another way to think of it. A moldy piece of bread in the dirt doesn't look very good to a satisfied person but appears as a blessing to a starving person. So I guess the real question is, do you feel like you're just getting acclimated to being a nonsmoker or do you feel like you're starving yourself? I really need to read more often to remember each phase of the journey. I so much remember missing the rewards of smoking and found it so hard to get motivated to do the simplest tasks. Even now, I have difficulty focussing in the evening sooooooooo I always get up and do most things when I'm more energetic at the beginning of the day. I do remember the first time that I wasn't stressed out in the grocery store line up. (Usually I was waiting for a fix and a long line up left me steaming) It felt sooooooooooo good to be able to stand and read the magazines without stressing about getting my next smoke. I remember the first long bus trip when all the smokers had to rush off the bus to get a smoke in while I could relax and enjoy the trip. I remember working late without resentment because I wasn't dying for that after work smoke and socializing with non-smokers and staying INSIDE instead of going out every half hour in the snow. Do you remember chain-smoking two in a row just to get your fix before you went back into the house? Anyway.......I'm rambling...it's time to mess up your routine a little. Find a new reward - a cup of coffee, a good magazine, a phone call....whatever works...we still need a break when we are doing those mundane tasks. Grocery shop at a different time of day. Try a new hobby ... do anything you can to switch your routine. And don't forget about the big rewards...It feels so good to go out and do something for yourself and say "I deserve this!!" Apparently, it's scientifically proven that we need to reward ourselves so, in the interest of science, I try to do it regularly. Sometimes it feels like we are making no progress at all...but look at you! Almost to the beach...and you are sooooooooooo right...those bone crunching hell week days are a thing of the past. You are right Sparky..there are alot of benefits to quitting. But, I was reflecting on the time interval/reward effect of quitting. Elderone, you are dead on with the time distortion. And cracking me up with the high fructose corn syrup. If it would help me get past some smoking thoughts at that time, I would totally do it! I too, like blue cloud, find myself turning in circles after completing a task. I am also looking forward to a peaceful time with no fricking smoking thoughts. Sometimes, I just have to MAKE myself sit down and read to distract myself from the smoking thoughts. I am having a crying jag today. I guess from being off the lozenges for 48 hours. I will go swim some laps, I guess.
