Give Yourself Permission

Fear of not being able to quit, actually stopped me from trying so many times. The only people that knew that I was trying to quit were the people on this site. I was not afraid to ask for help or just sit and read for hours.. No one here judges and they know what you are going through daily. Fear can cause us all to sit back and wait... There is a quote that goes like this: "I HAVE FOUND THAT THE DESIRE TO HAVE IS SOON REPLACED BY THE FEAR OF LOSING" Fear of losing unfamiliar ground is the worst emeny for most of us. No? Penguin couldn't agree with you more. How do you give yourself permission to recover from an addiction? Take it one day at a time, One minute at a time, One second at a time. Look in the mirror and tell the person looking back at you that they are worth it! I think that people have difficulty accepting and giving themselves permission to acknowlege that they have desires to smoke. Once you understand that they are just thoughts, that they can't hurt you, and that they are temporary - the next step is to accept them and then make a decision to not act on them - by smoking. A lot of times people will say I DON'T WANT TO SMOKE. Saying you don't want to smoke is like saying you are not hungry when you haven't eaten in 24 hours. Tell yourself the truth - you do want to smoke and then move on from there. If you keep denying that you want to smoke then you will eventually explode and say: "screw you....no one is gonna tell me I can't smoke." Acknowledging to myself that I do want to smoke takes the pressure off, so I can get to the next phase in my decision making. It's not such a bad thing to say you want to smoke....just don't do it! Bear, I think maybe they need to give themselves permission to accept the fact that it is an addiction first and foremost. Once you can accept that fact, it's easier to take the next step. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 197 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,925 Amount Saved: $2,078.35 Life Gained: Days: 24 Hrs: 2 Mins: 27 Seconds: 54

I think may people are afraid to give up their addiction, Bear. They are afraid they will lose more than they gain, or they are afraid of failure, or that they will not be able to cope with life on their own. We are lucky that we have taken that first step because the ones after it are not nearly as hard. There are lots of people who are too afraid to begin the journey. We should encourage and help them, and lead by our example. Don't you think? Strange eh !! How many people will not give themselves permission to recover from an addiction. They would sooner sit on their a---- and cry oh whoa is me little sorrow rather than say I,m a good person and I deserve better. :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 182 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,276 Amount Saved: $1,820.00 Life Gained: Days: 41 Hrs: 15 Mins: 8 Seconds: 7
