Alcohol and My Quit

It takes a while, in the end you will realise that everything is better without the smelly cigs. At first I stayed away from alcohol. Now it makes no difference. There is no special craving that alcohol triggers. However, bars and restaurants here have been smoke free for ten years or more. Hang in there. If a drink is a trigger, don't drink for awhile. Thanks for the kind words and support, I really love this site and I want to stay quit. If I have to quit drinking socially, then so be it. I work in a Cancer Clinic and see first hand what smoking does to our bodies. Maybe I will try the non-alcoholic beer, I hear they are pretty good. Hi Kaiti! Alcohol is not the best thing for your body anywow- and has loads of calories... But I fully understand- I'm having gin-tonic at the moment (it's nearly 8pm in Europe)- and I LOVE red wine. I don't think I would be up to drinking in a smoking environment, though. The drinks I allow myself are at home- or last week in a theatre foyer where smoking is prohibited. Good decision you've made. And one day we will be able to savour our wine without fearing cravings! cat My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/17/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 19 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 323 Amount Saved: 74.29 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 11 Mins: 51 Seconds: 1

Kaitilina, Realizing your triggers is the first step to learning how to cope with them. Don't get youself into situations that you are uncomfortable with unless you have a plan and you are prepared to deal with them. Keep the positive news comming! Brenna, Bilingual Support Specialist

It's probably worth giving up on the alcohal till you feel more sure of yourself with regard to stopping smoking. That's easy for me to say - I don't drink!! It's worth it though because otherwise it is too easy to persuade yourself out of your quit. Good luck and keep on going. You are doing well! Good for you for realizing that you haven't beaten that trigger, kaiti, & for protecting your quit. Alcohol can be a really strong trigger and can also really wreck a quit because of the lowered inhibitions. Keep doing what you're doing, you have a great quit going! Well, so far, so good, I've made it through quit a bit and I'm feeling strong in my quit (but not cocky). One area that has me very very afraid is social drinking and my quit. This past weekend, I was with a non-smoking friend (although she does smoke if someone has them around) and we had a few glasses of wine. There were no cigs to be found in the house, and yet I was craving big time. Alcohol and my quit do not go together very well, so now I have a big decision to make. I've already cut down my social drinking, offering to be the designated driver so my husband can have a few beers and avoiding certain social situations, but I know I can't run from it forever. I've made it through several drinking situations and some induce worse craves than others. At home, having a glass of wine with the hubby I have no problems (thank goodness). I am going to continue to be leery of alcohol and my quit. I will allow myself to be scared of drinking for as long as it takes. Just like cigs are the enemy, alcohol works hand in hand with the nicodemon to pull me back to smoking, and I don't want to be a smoker again!
