Kev, You are supposed to breathe through your nose when at the dentist! It's much easier if you do. I can't believe you are having your first ever filling! You must have good teeth. I have had SO much work done.....AND I am also a fellow fear sufferer. The only thing is that it does improve the more you go, and it will probably not be as bad as you think. I am a big fan of the injection - don't feel a thing after that - amazing. Also, a good dentist will numb the injection site too so you don't even feel that too much. This is done by putting some local anaesthetic on a cotton pad or rubbing the area with a finger to numb it or putting the injection in a bit at a time - a kind of 'numb as you go.' This means there is no difference in pain levels between a filling and an extraction because the anaesthetic works - I had my wisdom tooth out in the dental chair and felt no pain at all even though my anxiety level was pretty high at the time! I try to focus on a point on the ceiling and think calm thoughts. It makes a big difference if you can persuade yourself to relax. Do some of those deep breathing exercises before you go in. And concentrate on breathing through your nose! Guess what - I am at the dentist Tuesday morning for a filling so I will be able to suffer on the same day! When I walk out, I always think "Well, that was OK", but I still cannot seem to get over how I feel beforehand. Btw, Hi Kelly. I am doing ok at the moment. How about you? You've been a bit quiet of late. Or at least we have passed like ships in the night. I'm expecting a kellyworld report. Hi All, JFDI, yes not JDFI :) It WAS the nurses on my mind you know. Lizzie, all that nice logic with numbers you used is great. YES! I want to make 90% (day 150). You have a habit of making it sound achievable too. Even to this confidence lacking brain. Today was the day I had been fearing for a while....dentist day. I had even banned my parents from using the d word as when it is mentioned I just turn into a quivering wreck. I am what is known in the book as a complete dentophobe. I am about as scared as you can get. I guess I may cure myself the more dental appointments I have. I survived the examination without crying like a baby again. Unfortunately I get to have another first. My first ever fillings. Tuesday afternoon (20th). So I have another week of worrying and pacing up and down to do. I think one of the reasons I act brave is because the dental assistant is a cutie! Though you can't really chat someone up when dribbling! :) My dentophobia comes from not being able to breathe through my nose whilst in the dentist chair. And when they stick the sucking thing in my mouth I think I am going to suffocate! One scale and polish later and my teeth are whiter than white! The funniest thing of all is that my mum comes along to give me support but to also ensure I turn up! She knows me sooo well. Tresa, I was thinking of you a lot while I was there. I wonder what the pain for fillings is compared for extraction? Thanks for the kind wishes for Grace btw. She is a fighter I think. I'll keep you updated as we go along. ttfn HUGS from Kev My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 124 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,100 Amount Saved: 520.80 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 13 Mins: 48 Seconds: 30

Do you mean the reference to JDFI? I think it must have been the nurses that got to him. :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2003 Smoke-Free Days: 1664 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 24,960 Amount Saved: 6,240.00 Life Gained: Days: 166 Hrs: 10 Mins: 32 Seconds: 47
