Lizzie, I have the same problem. I know that one of my teeth has gone this way and there are more to follow. Your post offers hope! I was at my ex husbands house the other day picking up my son who was there taking care of his dad because he has a kidney stone and isn't feeling well. While I was there, I noticed a spot on his forehead that looked disturbing so I asked him about it. He said he was having it biopsied next week. Then he told me he wasn't going to be able to pick our son up on time Friday (today) because he was having gum surgery. I looked at my son and said, "another reason to never start smoking. Gum disease is caused by smoking." At that time, my ex looked at our son and said, "it can be. it complicates it." So, I said, "No, it probably caused it." My ex is in such denial! The good news is, he asked his doc about Chantix and got a script. He doesn't know when he's going to fill it, but at least he got it. Those of us here who have already quit, no matter how far along, are SO lucky. Getting started really is the hardest part. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 97 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,910 Amount Saved: $567.45 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 16 Mins: 57 Seconds: 8

As soon as my doctor told me I was on my way to COPD if I kept smoking I did some reading and discovered there's nothing there I'm interested in. All of a sudden I believed the warnings and there was only one thing I could do, quit doing what I was doing to myself. So I quit smoking and took the high road where COPD doesn't travel. Happy to be smoke free! My dentist tells me that my bone loss has stabilised since I quit, and just as well. No bone structure - No teeth. :gasp: Fortunately, I seem to have stopped it in time. Thats not all. I recently read an article about macular degeneration of the eyes and it is 90% caused by smoking as well! Look at all the grief we have saved ourselves from! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 267 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,675 Amount Saved: $2,816.85 Life Gained: Days: 32 Hrs: 15 Mins: 41 Seconds: 21

Bear - I work in nursing homes all day. Many of those people, and I mean many, have COPD. They have oxygen tanks and suction machines and nasty gross symptoms I don't even want to describe. Add to these things the feeling of drowning while trying to breath that has been described to me. It is an awful, awful thing and only goes to show how addictive nicotine is. Seriously, who would subject themselves to that kind of torture if it wasn't for addiction? I wonder what kind of Karma those drug pushing, greedy, selfish tobacco corps will experience? Glad I'm not them! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 94 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,820 Amount Saved: $549.90 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 10 Mins: 26 Seconds: 16

Not the most pleasant topic to bring up but I just finished reading an article and thought you might like to know. There are an estimated 750,000 Canadians who suffer from COPD and that number is likely a vast under-estimate according to a leading doctor here. The reason "it's hugely under-recognized " and guess what over 90% of COPD is linked to smoking. Now if you ever needed a reason to give up smoking that has to be another very good one.
