Hi Kathleen I just started my quit again and I'm using the patch. I had gone 10 days without smoking on the patch and then I quit using it and I fell off the wagon. You do get cravings even when you're using an NRT. I still get cravings on the patch but they go away in a short time. It comes in waves and you just have to ride them out. You can do it. Good for you to want to quit smoking. That's the first important step. Keep up the good work and get rid of the cigarettes you do have lying around. It just prolongs the agony and triggers you to want to smoke. Keep in touch. Kathleen, Despite your use of lozenges, it will not take away all of your cravings. We strongly encourage you to work through the tools of the program for tips on how to push through those craves. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator

Hi Kathleen, You're doing well. It is a good idea to not just rely on one technique. Maybe lozenges and iced water? Cut up straws seem to work too for some. The one I would suggest is deep breather exercises when you get a craving for a real cigarette. It does exactly the same as a smoke, but without inhaling any harmful chemicals. Hold tight. Just hang in there. This first week is hell, but you (we) can do this. Giving in is not the answer all that will do is lead you to another quit and that is not fun, I know. Aloha gave you some good advice. Keep the water handy, read, write. If you are at work and can get up and move do that. Tell you boss what is going on and let him/her know that you may need to get up and walk around for a few minutes. You can do this. Just don't smoke :eg: Keep the Quit Sparky My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 218 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,180 Amount Saved: $327.00 Life Gained: Days: 29 Hrs: 8 Mins: 17 Seconds: 26

Hey Kathleen, I can't give advice, but I can tell you what's worked for me. Welcome! I'm using patches. I've tried the cold turkey thing and it didn't work for me, but if you can pull it off, I think it's probably better. I chose patches because they release nicotine at a fairly constant level. I figured if I used gum or lozenges I'd use them like cigarettes. There are so many other ingredients in cigarettes that are probably addictive, plus the psychological addiction, that I figured I'd tackle one thing at a time. That has worked for me well so far. I'm about to go to step 3. What has worked even better is talking to people here. Write, write, write. It keeps your hands and mind busy, and reinforces your quit. And Ms. Alohakeia knows what she's talking about! Make sure you use the workbook here. Just keep reaching out, just keep riding the cravings out (they are actually very short in length-- just powerful), and just keep writing. Kathleen, welcome to the nuthouse. You know that when you smoke a cigarette you ingest nicotine & suffer from nicotine withdrawal approx. 20 minutes later. until you light up another cigarette & top up those diminishing nicotine reserves. You take one of your 'nicotine' lozenges you ingest nicotine, you suffer from nicotine withdrawal within 20 minutes.... & so it goes.
i don't just want to cut down i want to quit
May I suggest going cold turkey & be done with it... 3 days & the nicotine is completely out of your system, 3 weeks & you're on the home strait. all the best from an old Turkey. Hi Kathleen Have you looked at some of the program tools here? The glove compartment and workbook are helpful. If you really want to quit, that is the first step. It is usually tough at first, but if you're prepared with some coping strategies and really want it, you can do it. The reason you want to smoke the whole pack is because you're a nicotine addict and the addict part of you is getting scared. Drink plenty of cold water, don't look too far ahead, write down your reasons for quitting and keep reading them, tell yourself that each crave is only a few minutes long( When you smoke you start craving another cig about 20 minutes after you smoke), you can do this. Read and post here a lot, and pamper yourself for the first few days. Plenty of people here would love to see you succeed. Kathlen, I don't know how the lozenges you're using work, if they're the herbal kind that are supposed to help you cut down, or the ones that contain nicotine. So I can't really answer your question. But congrats on making the decision, and welsome to the site!
