Experience With Effexor?

Guarded Optimism Thanks for posting this " I've always believed that your willingness to let any medication work for you is one of the most important things in taking any medication. I could be wrong, but I just feel sometimes you're ready to stop fighting it. I know I am, so I'll see where this takes me" One of my fears is medications of ANY sort even herbal. That statement from you was pretty powerful for me. I have printed it out. Thanks

Hey- How's it going with the Efexxor? I've found it works well. I was on the tablets, but was a month later was put on the capsules Efexxor XR. I take two 75mg before I go to bed. I'm able to sleep off any drowziness and because it is time-released, it usually lasts me until bedtime the next night. I still do have panic attacks, but the effexor, in some instances, helps me to be able to control my situation before a full-blown attack appears. I cannot control the unexpected though. Hope all is well, Della :)

Guarded Optimism: Thanks for replying to my response. I always wondered if people just come and go at these sites. In any case, it's funny you should mention Klonopin. I am actually taking that right now and I know what you are talking about. I recently had a relapse with anxiety and began taking Lexapro (which takes about 6-8 weeks to fully become effective). In order to keep my anxiety levels at bay, my doctor(psych) prescribed Klonopin 1 mg 2x/day. That stuff knocked me out like a light and felt like a walking zombie the next day. So, I asked my psych if I could use a lower dose. He said, just take 0.5 mg 2x/day. This was also too sedating for me. I found that 0.5 mg before bedtime got me through the night and the next day with no troubles (and my psych had no problems with this dosage). So, I have been on Klonopin for ~4-5 weeks at that dose and I saw my pysch last Thursday. I told him I have never felt better...I was more active in daily life than I have ever been. So, I asked if it would be OK to try to come off it (because I know about the long-term risks of using benzos). He gave the go ahead. Following his instructions, I tapered down to 0.25 mg/day for 3 days, then stopped. I was fine...until the medicine left my body. Two days after stopping, the anxiety returned. I had no appetite and was running to the bathroom constantly with diarrhea and flatulence. Flatulence and diarrhea are not a fun combination! I did not throw up though. Then, at night, I awoke and felt a burning sensation in my upper torso and in my groin area. Any similar experiences with you??? Any recommendations by anyone else out there that has tried (with success) to come off benzos??? Today, I am going to visit family for Thanksgiving. I hope you all will be doing the same. Take care.

GuardedOptimism Hopefully this medication will assist in controlling your anxiety. This medication has many uses and in smaller doses can assist with generalized anxiety disorder. Please go over the possible side effects with you health care provider/pharmacist when starting this medication and have your blood pressure monitored regularly. A couple patient tips: Onset of full therapeutic effect may not be apparent before at least 2 weeks of therapy. May cause dizziness, blurred vision (NB driving). Avoid alcohol while taking Effexor. Swallow XR capsules whole with water-do not divide, crush, chew or place in water. Hope this helps, Angela _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team Edited on 11/24/2004 @ 10:44:52 AM by The Support Team

Steele, Thank you very much for sharing your experience. The nightmare stuff is pretty scary, but the truth is that I've been having some nightmares without Effexor, so maybe it won't be so bad. I've always believed that your willingness to let any medication work for you is one of the most important things in taking any medication. I could be wrong, but I just feel sometimes you're ready to stop fighting it. I know I am, so I'll see where this takes me. I've never had serious side efects from any medication. I usually get a bad stomach initially, but that's about it. I know going off of any drug is tough. It can't be any tougher than what I've had to go through to get off of Klonopin. I was pretty much an addict. Thanx again for the advice. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll keep you posted. :)

Guarded Optimism, Everyone's experience with drugs is different since chemically, we are all different. And, what these drugs do is alter the chemicals in our brain to make us feel better. Effexor is in a group of seratonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI'S), but is a multiple reuptake inibitor that acts like an SSRI and an SNRI...you'll have to read about these yourself. The hardest thing to do is get on the med and get off the med. Starting a med can present a whole host of side effects that, in some cases, can be unbearable. In my case, I used Effexor for about 1.5 years. Prepare yourself for a difficult 1st month. But, the key is to remain optimistic...remember, my experience may be different than yours...here are some side effects I had initially: dizziness, poor concentration, vivid nightmares (even invoking childhood), nausea. I called my doctor 4 times in the 1st month to make sure this was normal. Eventually, my body and brain grew accustomed to Effexor and I was anxiety/depression free for the remainder of my treatment. However, some of the unpleasant side effects continued, one of which was the vivid nightmares. With my doctors approval, I felt it was time to stop taking this med. Withdrawal from any med is difficult. If you ever do this, do it very, very slowly. It could take 2-3 months with a slow taper. Fortunately, Effexor is made up of tiny granules which you can easily add/remove from the capsules. Discontinuation symptoms can be very bad with this drug, so beware. The slow taper should help keep these at bay.

Hi. My doctor just prescribed Effexor for me. I start taking it tomorrow. This is really the first drug I've ever taken that specifically targets my panic attacks. I've been misdiagnosed for a while, so I'm pretty excited. What should I expect? Where does this drug rank among all the drugs out there for anxiety? I've been making some progress. I'm hopeful that this will help. Any feedback is appreciated.
