What has worked and what hasn't

Hey stickin They all worked - if any of them hadn't, I'd be smoking again! :p There were many, some of which have been mentioned here, but the main ones that worked combined with the help of this site was sheer determination and a very positive attitude - I just WOULDN'T give in and as I close in on four years, I haven't! What helped... Admitting to myslef that I am addicted to nicotine. Yes I am an addict. and like any type of addict... Not One Puff Ever also to realize that... my life was revolving around a pack of 20 cigarettes.. when I left the house... did I have enough with me ..to make it back home again.. Where was I going to smoke. Did I have enough packs to get me to________ did I have enough money to buy cigarettes to get me to next pay day, or the next trip to town. That this Pack of 20 ... was controlling me. I already had a stroke.. I was beginning to get a little wheeze, short of breath when doing things.. Do I want to live.. or keep slowly killing myself. What helped with craves... ice cold water, ice chips, frozen juice bars. reminding myself NOPE.. Finding your triggers.. mine are getting hungry and gettin tired. what helped.. planning little rewards.. saving the money I spent on smokes.... Deep breaths... coming here and reading.. looking at my meter and others....... knowing I have friends here who will help me get thru this. How could I have forgotten Self Talk???? That was one of the things that helped me out the most. I had to tell myself many many times that I am a non-smoker.. then before I knew it I started to really believe it! Self talk works! There are several things that have worked for me... 1st being water. Early in my quit I made sure that I had a bottle of ice cold water with me everywhere. Whenever I had a crave I would turn up the water bottle. This not only helped the craves, but is also helped to clear the toxins out of my body and helped me with my weight control! AND, a year later I still drink water and feel so good! I found that anything I could do with my hands could help the craves.. So, coming here and posting was a huge help... but I also went out and bought a hand held Suduko game. I had never played Suduko, but with this handheld game I learned, and I was able to use my hands to play and hopefully that was retraining my brain. Chewing gum didn't really help me, neither did hard candy... I don't know why but it didn't work as well for me as the water...
