Hi, Paula... I know that you're really committed to this Final Quit. You prepared yourself well this time. The only thing that freaks me out is that it sounds like (from another thread) that you are letting people smoke in your house? Is there nothing you want to do about that? I know it's hard to tell friends that they have to smoke outside but this is your home, your breathing space and you have the absolute right to tell friends to not smoke inside. I know that you've mingled with smokers outside the pub and the dinner dances during your quit and you've survived through sheer will power but I wonder if you wouldn't feel a lot stronger and less "triggerish" if you stayed well away from others when they're smoking.
 
   You're doing great and you deserve a treat; drive out to Glendalough and visit Kevin's Bed for me - I miss that little lake !!

In my experience thinking about quitting for 40 to 45 years and not being able to get it done, I dreaded the thought of NEVER ever being able to smoke again and so this time, while healing, I never lead myself down the road to NEVER.  What I did though was to say to myself “let's get past this moment, this minute, hour, and day”, and the jubilance waking to find that you made it through yesterday, made it all so worthwhile, obtainable to go for the NEXT hour, NEXT day! Let’s work with what works for you!

When you hear things like that it kind of brings it closer to home, doesn't it. My mam died 6 years ago of cancer at the age of 45, and she never smoked in her life. It is possible to quit, you have to keep working at it. I started this post one month ago, I had slipped up once again and I was sick of fighting the craves day in and day out. I've been on and off this site since 2005 trying to stop, the longest I have made it in all those attempts is 3 weeks.

I knew that I couldn't do this cold turkey and I brought together all of the help I could get. 

  • I gave myself 7-10 days to prepare before my new quit date
    I spoke to my doc and got a prescription for zyban and started taking that
  • I bought a nicotine inhaler and have it in my purse everywhere I go (haven't needed it though!) 
  • I got a stop smoking book by Paul McKenna and have listened to the cd every night before bed for nearly 3 weeks
  • I had a fair idea what my triggers were
  • I thought about my alternative- smoke until I die.
  • I had the support of the wonderful people on this site

The night before my quit I had no confidence and had no idea how I would manage to get through an hour without a cig but slowly and surely I suprised myself, the hours ticked over into days, and soon they will tick over into months and hopefully then into years. I know I can never have a cig again, and sometimes it does feel impossible but you just have to keep working through it, if you want it. I can honestly say this time round, I do.

I just received an email from my friend. His mother has got cancer again.
This time she will not to do the treatment.
She is expected to die in 3-4 weeks 
 
Yes, she was a smoker.
 
You know you can quit, I did, many here did.
 
So just do it. 
 
One week of hell, a few months of intermittant cravings then your home free.

I hear you with that one, BJ.  We have no small children in the house, but we do have our first grandchild on the way.  I don't want any second hand smoke for the baby OR for my beagles.  They are all precious to me.

Go back and read and do some of the work books. 
 
For the next 3 days.. Write down Each cigarette you smoke, the time, why you smoked it, why you craved it, why you couldn't/didn't want to say No to it.
 
Write down Every trigger... you can't avoid triggers.. life happens.. and you have to learn to live life without a cigarette.
 
Write down what YOU are going to do for each trigger... water, a mint. gum.. a walk,... whatever you decided on for your coping mechanisms.
 
Smoking is  a choice.. apparently you can say No sometimes, but you are NOT committed enough yet to say NO every time.
 
I used Chantix, yes it had some side effects, but I used it long enough to  1. decided I am committed to this quit and get through the roughest spots.   Do I still want to smoke... Yes sometimes I do.. Have I ?   No  The choice is mine, and so far I have chosen to say No.    Why?  Because I do not want to spend my $$$ on a pack a day.. I like smelling clean.  I like Not having to run outside and find a spot to smoke..  and VERY important... for my animals..
 
you have to figure out if the reasons for Not smoking are More important than the Reasons to smoke.

You are determined to do this so be pro-active about it.  There is lots of support and advice, take what you need and keep it close.  Enlist in your doctor or community group for extra support.
 
You have to want this and it is ok to work towards it.

Learn to deal with the craves as your life depends upon it and do not take it mightly.  Crave after dinner, do the dishes, tell hubby you are headed for bed, take couple aspirins, shower, soft music, pull the covers over head and dream about how good you have been and how you will be feeling when you awaken in the morning.  A good cup of coffee or tea tastes might fine without the additive.  You do not need it.
