ML,

Good to see you back.  Wonderful that you have sought a therapist to help you sort things out and battle the craves.  Congrats on reaching 322 smoke-free days!  Don't forget to reward yourself for getting this far!!  Keep strong.

Moss - How very kind of you to ask about me.  I'm doing much better.  Oh, the craves are still there from time to time, especially old habits as you pointed out but I've resisted.  And thank you, Karren, for your kind words.

Actually, I came to the point this past Summer where I just couldn't cope any longer so I sought the help of a therapist and have been seeing her since mid-July on a weekly basis.  We really don't talk about non-smoking but the underlying causes of why I think that I can't cope.  She has helped me tremendously and I am getting to the whys.  Lots of digging and lots of soul searching.  As she pointed out to me, my life is what it is, there is only so much I can change as I only have control of myself (and sometimes not even then) and not others.  So, it's my decision as to what I want and how to achieve it.  Sometimes it's not easy but at other times there are great "aha" moments.  It's really not treatment for depression, although that probably comes into somewhere, but, rather, pointing me to the right road.  A big side benefit is that it surely knocks out the craves.

Hi ML......

Just checking in.  Hoping this finds you content and able to find more comfort in your days.  I've been missing talking with you and Kelly, and Natalie as well.  I think it is great that she has found she doesn't need to be here as much, but it's nice to hear how she's doing, too.

Right now the colors are at peak here.  I went to my favorite spot to view the landscape and sat on my rock for a while.  I actually reached in my pocket for you know what. Sooooo many associations with those little sticks. It was more funny than anything.  Just amazed at the subconscious habit yet. I don't think I've ever sat there in 20 years without having a few smokes while there.  Another first in this new trail in life.

Have a good day, week, month fellow No-ember and check in when you've a mind to.

Moss

ML I just want you to know I was away on holiday when this thread started and these last few days (during breaks from holiday ironing) I have tried to catch up with the posts and threads- I just didnt want you to think I wasnt there for you- I would of been without question- anyway after reading this thread I can see the terrific members of SSC all came to your aid and you made it through.
You are a huge inspiration to me and many others, and it was a huge reminder that we are all still very vulnerable however far into our quits, but also it can be overcome with strength and tenacity and you have shown us all its possible ((Hug))

Thanks for the flowers, Moss, that was very thoughtful and most appreciated.  And (((((hugs))))) are good, Kelly.  To everyone who posted on this thread, thanks for your input.

As I mentioned somewhere along the line, I am a widow.  Not a recent widow but a widow nonetheless.  That combined with deciding to quit smoking has raised issues of its own.  So, I am taking coping mechanisms from widowhood and applying them to not smoking and it seems to be working.  And I'm still standing.

The funny (strange) thing is that although I have a craving to smoke, I really don't want a cigarette.  I want the idea of smoking, or the habit of smoking, if that makes any sense.  I had an early appointment on Monday and decided to kill some time at Barnes & Noble before my next stop, which was later.  Well, it was early and the store hadn't opened as yet, so I was waiting outside when a woman came up, tried the door, found it locked, pulled a cigarette out of her purse and lit up.  I stared at the cigarette in fascination - only way I can describe it - and was of two minds, I wanted to rip it out of her hand and puff away and at the same time it disgusted me.  Since I'm retired and can pick and choose where I go when I want, I have kind of stayed away from smokers so really haven't been exposed that much to active smoking since I quit.  But having this woman light up practically under my nose made me realize that I didn't want to smoke.

I have worked through the times when I normally would have a cigarettte - breaks in working in the house, sitting at the computer and talking on the phone, almost everything I did.  Now I have to work on breaking the habit of the so-called satisfaction it gave me.  I was only fooling myself.  Hour by hour and step by step and I'll have it made - - - - I hope.
