Thanks for the help everyone! I read Allen Carr's book. It made sense to me. I guess that means I'm ready to quit. With the help of the new gym I should not gain extra pounds. I'm drinking tea instead of coffee for now. It makes things easier for me.

Renee congrats too on surviving the first whole day of not smoking- and anyone who has smoked knows that is some achievement- every day without smoking is a successful day for us, and thats how most SSC'ers do it- one day at a time! so well done, keep it up!

Renee, congrats on surviving day 1!  What kept me going when I first quit is my quit meter, seeing how many cigarettes I didn't smoke, seeing how much money I didn't spend, AND how much time I gained back.  Be sure to reward yourself as you progress!  You deserve it!  And remember, we've all gone through what you are going through.  When the nicodemon strikes, change your scenery, take a walk, post to this site and wait for a response, call a friend, drink a huge glass of ice water.  Do whatever it takes!  We're all here to help each other succeed!

Hi Renee,

Congratulations on taking this stand with us.....The first day is hard as the nicotine starts to leave your body...Before you no it the nicotine will be gone and be replaced with the nicodemon (A.K.A - The need or desire).  He will be the devil on your shoulder telling you words that don't make any sense....You'll know this and if you've ever quit before you have probably met him....Phrases like "Your having a hard day, how about quitting when things settle down" "You've quit smoking for so long, your not even addicted to it, just be a social smoker" and my favorite "C'mon, just one won't hurt you."

As time passes the nicodemon will be walking through the dessert trying to live but slowly slipping away....He will yell, scream, and fight to live and you are his host...By having just one you give him a glass of water and make him stronger which in the end makes you weaker....Stay strong....

There is a good book if you have a hard time with the desire to smoke.  It's called Allen Carr's - The easyway to quit smoking...It's written by an ex smoker and puts things in perspective so your not still cursing your quit years down the road...For me I had an easier time quitting on past attempts than I did staying quit because I always thought I was missing out on something.  You will find out soon enough that that's not the case at all.  After reading the book I knew I wouldn't smoke again....On that note he doesn't put us down or show pictures of disease...He smoked a lot and quit and wrote the book to help others quit too...

Congratulations Renee!!!  Your doing great.

Well done you ... you went one whole day without a smoke ... but I bet it feels like a month!!!!  and it you are anything like me, you've been eating as if it were a month!!  I see you joined some time ago ... is this your first or new attempt to kick the habit?  Stick in there, you've gained three hours of life already ... just think, that's enough time to cook (and eat) a fabulous meal with a really delicious dessert for afters and soon you will have gained enough time to throw in a great movie (obviously with popcorn!)  Okay .. now you probably think that I am a little deranged ... but watching the hours I am gaining back in life is helping me get through this ... I think I should have gained one whole day back.  So for me ... 10/11 days of no smoking = 1 day of life gained .... seems a little unequal right? ... but then we are 'stealing' time back from the 'nicodemon' ... and we just know he doesn't fight fair! ... keep up the great work ... it is tough ... but I bet you are tougher!
