Rock:
I'm really sorry about your partners struggle with cancer. I know, the most important thing for him should be being strong and able to receive the next quimotherapy treatment. He wil quit when he is ready; every quitter has his time, I was told in the quit smoking seminar. So you understand this clarly.
Miss Marple: I also hate lies!!! I can't stand them, even harmless ones!!! Even half trues!!! I'm with you in that.

to you, Rock!  It has to be hard to watch a partner smoke who has cancer.  We also have random drug/alcohol screens (they are even debating making no nicotine a hiring requirement).  I always tell everyone that when I retire I am going to become a pot-head!  I had an elderly aunt who was not very worldly who's husband was dying.  He had lost so much weight and had no appetite.  She once said she had read where marijuana increases the appetite and said she knew her garbage collector sold it and wondered what I thought about that.  I told her it was illegal, and then finished with 'it couldn't hurt'---goodness he was terminal!  He died three days after my visit.  I called my aunt immediately and she said, "I know what you're thinking, but it was just his time.  The trash isn't collected until Thursday!"  She is my favorite aunt!
Thanks for all of your responses.  I haven't been too hard on him.  I like what you said, Windy.  Yesterday when I was home alone (no witnesses; and if you tell anyone I will deny it) I threw a measuring cup across the kitchen and then started to cry, out of frustration.  And anger---but I was angry, at that particular time, because I knew I had to clean up the mess AND buy a new glass measuring cup
He says he's quitting again, that he has just been 'dabbling' for the last few weeks.  But, believe me, I know where 'dabbling' leads.  You know what ticks me off the most, that initially when I asked, he denied it.  I really dislike lying!!!  If you lie about smoking, what the hell else are you lying about
