Night Time Problems

Hi Wanda, I get panic at night also. that is how mine started. It is very scary waking up hot and sweating and shaking and very confused. I find that I dont have them as much not i am on meds, but I do have the weirdest dreams. I find that I wake up in panic after having bad dreams, dreams where it might make me start to hyperventalate and then sometimes I just wake up freaked out for no reason. I havn't figured out a way to stop them, but I dont let them get to me anymore...its like I've had them so many times I know now that I am not dying its just an attack and will go away any minute now. It really helps as soon as you wake up scared to just talk to your self and say "okay its just another panic episode Im fine, i didn't die last time, so I wont this time"...hope that helps. Panic at night is very common.

Thanks Brittany - it is hard especially if you are the kind of person who is sensitive to missing sleep. I'm not sure if there is anything else to do? I guess just trying to relax before bed is the best we can do. I also start to get anxiety thinking that I won't beable to sleep - so it is a cycle for sure. It is also hard because you are asleep, so how to control the panic from coming on in the first place? Sometimes I don't think I am even completely awake to realize what is happening at the start of the panic. I guess just training your mind and body to relax during the day will eventually transcend into the night? - I hope!

Hi Wanda my name is Brittany and I am 19 years old married with a 1 year old daughter.I have just recently experienced my first panic attack during the night.Normally I get them during the day and 2 days ago a panic attack woke me up from a dead sleep.I woke up and my face and arms were tingling and i couldnt breatha and I just thought "I am going to die" then the following night the same thing happened.I am getting to the point where I am afraid to go to sleep at night in fear that I will have another panic attack and i dont know what to do.If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks Crystal - I will also try what you suggested to write things down but usually I don't have any idea why I am waking up with heart pounding and in a sweat - no dreams that I can remember anyways.

Thanks for the suggestions - I have tried relaxation methods, music, baths, breathing, warm milk, etc. I may be having the best day - feel positive and relaxed and I will still wake up at night - then I tend to get frustrated and negative. A bad cycle I guess. I am trying not to let this get me down but it does. I will keep trying. I guess I just wanted to know if this happens to others and I also wondered why I wake up with a racing heart. That is always the first thing I notice - what causes the racing heart? Cause I don't remember having a bad dream - could I be dreaming but am not remembering the dream? I am always thinking it is a heart disorder because why would my heart race for no reason when I am asleep - if I was waking up from a bad dream that might make me feel better - give me a reason to understand why this is happening but I guess I have just started to let it frustrate and worry me.

Wanda, Thank you for sharing your story. Have you tried relaxation techniques? What about breathing techniques? For tonight, prepare by reducing your anxiety level as much as you can. Try a hot bath, some soothing music or a warm beverage. Tomorrow do sign up for the Panic Diary where you can record your daily level of anxiety. You can also find how helpful it is to use breathing techniques to help you deal with your panic and anxiety. The Panic Program can help you understand more and may help you go about challenging your thoughts. Continue to work through the program slowly. Hope this helps, Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team. Edited on 2/21/2005 @ 11:55:11 AM by The Support Team

Hi Wanda I wake up sometimes at night after a few hours sleep with a bad PA too, sometimes I can remember what i was dreaming about and sometimes not. I been trying to keep a notepad nearby so I can write down what my thoughts are when i wake up so I can try to figure out what is causing me to do this. Finally after a few nights I got the source, I have something pretty hurtful going on in my life atm and it brought on the night time attacks. Sometimes I get them in the morning too. I do the same thing I write down what my thoughts and feelings are and later on or the next day I will read it and try to sort it out looking for a trigger. Maybe this will help. Good Luck

Hi - I have been working through the panic program. Getting help for my anxiety is great but I still have a problem at night and am not sure what to do. I have had an anxiety problem during the day but I never have a panic attack during the day - my panic seems to come when I am sleeping. I wake up at night, sometimes only once, but often over and over again. It seems to be at the same point in my sleep cycle - about 30 - 45 min after I fall asleep - I am suddenly awake with a racing heart, I then get sweaty , I use to panic but now I have realized more what is happening. So now I just wake up, feel hot, get a bit frustrated over the whole situation, then fall back asleep, only to wake up again about 30 -4 5 min later. Does anyone have this problem? The panic program (so far) has not given me any information on how to deal with panic at night. Even though I have been feeling better during the day, I still seem to wake up with a rcing heart and I don't really understand what is causing it. Any help would be much appreciated as this is a very frustrating problem. Thanks.
