hi wanda i have been getting pa,s for 8 years and my worst times have always been when im trying to sleep or just after falling to sleep i think it is because during the day we have other things going on to keep us to take our minds off it a bit tv ,phone calls, friends dropping by whatever but at night it is just us and anxiety and we think about it 100%where as in the day it may be only 60 or 70%because of the distractions and i feel here lies the answer to beating this thing i have noticed that my best days are when im real busy and i dont have time to dwell on anxiety ,and i know doctors tell me to relax at night as much as i can and get the anxiety levels down low but you and me know if we could do that then we wouldnt have this problem they dont really know what its like only we do so i think only we can beat this ,what i do at night is only go to bed when im really tired so im not lying there thinking and much more likely to fall straight asleep i hope some of this helps and good luck with it bye

I know this is an old string, but can I join to? I'm in the same boat. I can get to sleep reasonably well. I can't sleep on my left side because I can hear my heart and it's too distracting. Like others, my witching hours are between 3 and 5AM. This morning, like so many others, I woke up at 3 and felt my heart rate take off almost immediately. I can usually get it under control with meditation style controlled breathing. While that ends the attack after several minutes, I'm still left with a good amount of anxiety. Some nights it only happens once. Some nights I might get it 2 or 3 times. Sometimes, when it's time to get up in the morning, my heart is pounding more than racing and it feels like it wants to start palpitating. It's very, very hard to get a good night sleep and not enough sleep just makes the anxiety worse the next day. This is such a terrible thing to happen to anyone. Since many of these notes were written last year, I sincerely hope and wish and pray you've all found some relief! If you have any secrets to share on how you improved, please let us know. Thanks.

Hi Wanda, I just read your posting from February. Have you had any relief yet? I'm going to share a little something with you. I sometimes wake in panic that I can't breath, it takes a few moments to calm myself down to be able to fall asleep. It only happens once a night, not every night. If you ask any Psychologist, Psychiatrist they will say it's not normal to get panic at night as your mind is at rest, even with dreams. This is probably why you cannot find material in the books regarding night-time panic. I myself don't know if I believe this, but I myself could not find any proof of night-time panic in all the books I have. What I do have is Mitral Valve Prolapse and it is a way your heart beats differently from a normal heart. Read up on it. Alot of the symptoms are like anxiety. Alot of people have Mitral Valve Prolapse and don't even know it. I had no idea I had it. It makes sense when you read it. But as it does scare you and is frustrating, I have just had a 24hr holter monitor test done about two weeks ago now. You keep a diary of your day and it monitors your heart beats. I have not got the results back yet, but it shouldn't be too much longer. I'll keep you posted to what I find out. I hope you have found relief and are able to sleep now. Kathy

The night is always the worse for me also. I would look at my bed and think I don't want to go there. I felt panic just looking at my bed. It is so frightening to be awakened from your sleep with a panic attack. However, for the past several weeks I have been practicing deep breathing exercises several times a day and I have not had a panic attack. As far as medication is concerned, I take 1 Klonopin about one hour before going to bed. When the moon is full...I know, this is just for me personally, I have a hard time going to sleep. I take an Ambien. So far so good.

I understand the night thing. My first was when i had laid down to sleep and after about half hour I had one while my two kids were lying beside me and my husband away at work. I thought I was dying and went to ER. I have had all mine at night and am afraid each night my husband goes to work. I wish they would stop.

hi lseprincess I know it is hard to wait for an appointment. You might try a journal, doesnt have to be about anything just whatever you are thinking about and what is happening in your day. It helps me to get my thoughts and feelings out since I usually update my journal before I go to sleep and it does help sometimes.

I know this was an old post but I'm new here and reading through the messages. This one really hit home. My biggest problem is that I fall asleep fine but I wake up around 4am and with so much anxiety. I get really sweaty, my heart pounds, my arms tingle and I just feel all over miserable. I take a xanax but that only lets me sleep for about another hour. Then I wake up again and feel just as panicky. I've been getting out of going to work (at least in the mornings) sometimes because I feel so anxious. I've tried the deep breathing but nothing seems to help. If I could just wake up feeling okay I think I could make it through the day so much better. I start therapy in three weeks (fasted they could get me in.) I really hope it helps. I'm so tired of feeling miserable and not able to enjoy my life.

Thanks Canadian-Mel, For someone like myself who likes to be in control - panic at night is really scary like you said. Even now, after having many night time panic episodes, sometimes I do know what is going on and that bothers me because I thought with the realization of it - it would then stop - but it's like my body is just going through the motions of anxiety and I am just helpless to stop it. Even though I am aware and telling myself to calm down - try and breath, my body is still going through the motions, first heart racing, then hot and sweaty, chest pains, feeling like I can't catch my breath and then shakey. I hope that my brain has not adopted this as some built in habit.
