medicines?

hi all, in reponse to your question, i have been to the priory, but not in the accepted sence, i do 'chairs' there, for people in recovery from alcohol (im an alcoholic) i did apply to go myself but the programme is (in my opinion) flawed. they seem to concentrate on getting you in and out as soon as possible, dont get me wrong though, they have the best in the business, but i felt it was all about the money not the client! And considering the calibre of people in there i cant really say more(bound to secrecy as to who is in there for obvious reasons) as far not being able yo get to a centre because your anxiety/aggorophobia stopping you, i had the same problem.can your family not help? in the end i found St Johns ambulance would take me there, and for a VERY reasonable fee(about 10pence a mile) so try that option, also try other voluntary organisations whoi do first aid cover at charity events, they also help with patient transport schemes. If all else fails tho, mayBEiting the bullit and just going on your own is the answer, see it as the first step(you WILL be pround of yourself!) aS FAR AAS I KNOW, no one HAS EVER DIED FROM AGGOROPHOBIA, io know it feels like s##t but you can do it! let me know how you get on! good luck!

Hi Carleen, Yes, EFT is Emotional Freedom Techniques. It's a meridian therapy which works on the same principles as accupressure. It's fascinating and, I found, fairly effective. I'm sure you'll have practitioners in the US because you are so far ahead of us in terms of treatments. You also have the virtual exposure centres which we don't have yet. People with severe agoraphobia can do exposure work there without having to face actually going to a mall or museum or wherever. Hope this helps. Luv Caz xx

Hi Carleen, I think the therapy you are referring to is emotional freedom technique. I have bumped up an old thread for you where members have discussed this topic in the past. Your doctor or therapist would be able to provide more detailed information for you. Casey ___________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

Hi, Could you tell me what EFT is and is it used in the US? I am also agoraphobic. Carleen

Hi Pete, I'm from Bonnie Scotland! We have "free places" here too. Unfortunately I can't get to them because of my agoraphobia. I have had counselling though but suspect it may have been a med student who did this and I was less than impressed. I've also tried complentary therapies, accupunture, hypnotherapy, aromatherpay etc. The only one I have found helpful is EFT which I still use regularly to help me to go places. I'm learning meditation at the mo too which definately helps my sleep pattern and general frame of mind. I'm on the waiting list for more mainstream psych help but it's a 5 month wait now. I have perstered my GP and CPN and asked them to chase this up but to no avail. I'm not the type to sit hopefully waiting for help to land in my lap and have done endless research into this condition and the genetics involved, I have also tried endless therapies like I have said. Unfortunately my condition is hereditory and therefore hard to treat. I'll still keep trying though, I'm not a quitter. So have you tried the Priory? What complimentary therapies have you tried? Have you encoutered EFT? :o) Caz xx

hi carol, glad to see im not the only brit in here! sorry to hear you had a rough time with the NHS, doesnt suprise me tho! do you mind if i ask which part of the country your in? im from london(obviously!!)and ive found that each hospital/surgery/clinic i go to (or have been to!) give me a different diagnosis. I would now go in fully armed with information and only ever allow a specialist to see me! seeeing some post grad medical student just isnt good enough!have you ever tried somewhere like the priory? (there are free places!)I should know!)also, and please dont think im trying to teach you how to suck eggs, try phoning your local councilling, NHS practice everyday, i did, and they put me in as soon as someone cancelled, apparently it all works on how keen they percieve you to be, so call as often as you can, hassle them if you like, just let them know your as willing to get help as they are to give it! good luck, let us know how you get on! london pete

Hi Pete, I have to say I found your e-mail astonishing. I too am from, across the pond and have found that the doctors here are far too eager to presribe drugs. I was put on Seroxat at the age of 20 and only managed to get off it 8 years later and with a catalogue of problems. Now I'm on Prozac and Diazepam. I have had an ongoing battle with the NHS to get the correct help and even a correct diagnosis. Nine years later and I'm waiting for an appointment with a psychologist and a psychiatrist which will take around 5 months. I agree that individual cases should be looked at very carefully before handing out the drugs. Unfortunately I rely on medication now and have very little choice if I want to maintain any kind of normality in my life. Hopefully other people will get the right help when they need it. Carol x

I know that docs give out SSRIs like candy here! I never had a problem with it. I know that all docs are different. My doctor has never brought up a tranquilizer or sedative but some do. I went to the urgent care center once and the doc gave me ativan. That is some serious stuff! I stopped once I found out how addicting it can be.

hi all, as some of you might have read im from across the pond in good old britain.Love the forums, love the support but i have a general question for...well... everyone really, but more for the moderators. Over here in the UK our doctors hardly EVER actually perscribe drugs/seditives etc for anxiety/panic.the much more preferred route to recovery comes from councilling. Its just that nearly EVERY one on these forums is operating on some sort of sedative or another! i know from personal experiance that councilling works, and from my own researh, taking medicines will only COVER the REAL problems so your NEVER working through the issue, i just dont see the point, please dont get me wrong, i know everyone needs some relief from symptoms from time to time, but to truely work through it surely being clean of ALL influences is better, good luck all, londonpete x PLEASE NOTE, IM NOT A DOCTOR AND I HAVE NO MEDICAL BACKGROUND WHATSOEVER SO PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR AND THE MODS HERE! IM SIMPLY ASKING A QUESTION, CERTAINLY NOT TRYING TO INFLUENCE ANYONE!
