How many smokers do you have in your family?

for 15 år siden 0 389 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I have 6 siblings - 3 sisters - all who smoke and 3 brothers, none smoke.  Mom and Dad smoked when we were growing up - I remember my siblings and I throwing an entire carton of their cigarettes away and from that moment on, they didn't smoke.  Dad never resumed smoking and passed away in 1987 due to complications from a liver transplant.  Mom started back smoking a few years after Dad died and she's still at it despite all the health problems she's been facing (most due to smoking).
My aunt and uncle (on my Dad's side) and one of their three sons smoked - they are all dead now.  :-(
My grandparents (on my Dad's side) both smoked when they were younger but had both quit although, he still smoked a pipe now and then.  Both are dead now as well.
My Mom's side of the family is an unknown as my Mom was a black-market baby (she was sold out of the hospital) so we don't know anything about her real family.

Sydney, you're doing great!  The more you post, the less time you have to be out smoking!!!  Congrats!

Interesting thread.  My parents both smoke, my dad quit a few yrs ago and recently started back up.  My mom still smokes.  But none of my siblings ever smoked.  I started smoking when I was younger and would sneak them from my parents.  My parents own a grocery store so I would then get smokes from there and then the addiction began.  I remember being so embarrased that my parents smoked when I was growing up.  I wont do that to my daughter.

I was the only smoker in my immediate family.  I started after college as the group I hung out with at my first job smoked.  I always believed I was a "secret" smoker, dousing myself with cologne and breath mints whenever I was near my family.  I always blamed the smell on my clothes from the bars and other who smoked.  Now that I can smell a smoker a mile away, I wonder if I actually fooled my family?  Or maybe they just never said anything?  All I know is I used to go through can's of air freshener non-stop to get rid of smoke smells in the house when my family came over.  Now the cans just sit since there is no smoking in the house!  Bottom line, smoking wasn't "in my genes", it was peer pressure!

No one in my family smokes, had an uncle that did but he is gone now. Both my parents smoked when they were really young, but I had never seen it or knew of it until they told me. My mom smoked while she was pregnant with me, and I was the only one out of 3 kids to smoke. I was caught when I was 9 or 10, again the next summer at 10 or 11, and again at 14. I finally started full time at 15.

Good thread Sydney, always helps to think about 'where you've come from' - you're well on your way I think!

My entire immediate family smoked forever (mom, dad, brother) and mom quit 1-1/2 years ago saying I inspired her to so who knows what you can do for your family smokers!  Both grandmothers smoked on and off, one more than the other.  One died of oral cancer, the other of such a list of illnesses who knows but both quite old (late eighties).  Didn't know the grandfathers but one was a raging alcoholic so I'd bet the cigs went with it - died in his 60s I think.  The other in his 70s, suspect he smoked too.

Aunts and uncles?  Only one aunt on dad's side and one uncle on mom's side - their kids never took it up.  Good on 'em.

No one in my DH family smokes but him and I'm STILL waiting for him to stop three years on.  He always said he thought I'd never be able to quit.  Maybe it was himself he thought would never quit!  There's that fear again.

I think younger people now are addicted to cell phones far more than cigarettes!!  Lucky them.

I don't really know because there are so many people in my extended family. Most of the smoking is in my generation and above. The kids (30 and below) are less likely to be smokers. The number has fallen quite a bit over the past five or so years. Right off the top of my head, I know of eight of us who have quit and another four who are trying. I think the smoking rate has fallen from about 20% to about 10-12%. Of course that number includes children. If just adults, I'd say 1 in 5 or 6 smoke. However, when I was a kid more than half of the adults in the family smoked.

Hi Sydney16, you are doing great !

To answer your question my Mom, dad, grandmother, brother & all my closest work collegues smoked when i quit but at this very moment they are all quit except my brother (& not from lack of trying poor thing !).

Most of these smokers made sly remarks & usual rolling of eyes when they learnt i quit but i just laughed it off in good humour.

Looking back i wasn't provided with much help or support from smoking family members or friends (which is completely understandable) however, this didn't stop me from providing them with as much support & knowledge i could manage to help them in their decision to quit & i guess it all payed off.

I only hope some of this rubs off here.

How many smokers do you have in your family? extended and immediate

For me I have one sister who smokes, she knows I quit she teases me a bit about it. I think she is just a bit threatened maybe that I quit, as far as I know she hasn't tried to quit.  She is a year older than me and she kind of influenced me to quit. I don't bug her about  quitting or shove it in her face because I know that would annoy her and if she wants to quit she will. Hopefully she will too.

My brother a adamant non smoker. hes four years older than me Got his current gf to quit smoking because he hated to smell, I remeber he used to complain to me about how awful I smelled of smoke, more so when i was younger but I remeber being embarrassed being around him smoking. I don't know if he has ever tried but he hates it and can't see him ever becoming a smoker.

My mom hmmm, strange story with her a bit. She smoked when she was a teen and young adult like me I don't know to what extent but she quit before I was born. So I grew up with her not smoking. She would sometimes smoke with me though as a teenager as a way to I dont know relate to me? But never smoked regularly. When she met her bf who is a heavy smoker she started smoking regularly but quit as he still smokes away. She found it easy did it cold turkey don't know how long she smoked that time but not long really. She hated that I smoked and is one of the reasons I quit but really its for me because she nagged me to quit all the time and I didn't listen. She is very proud of me.

My dad, not a smoker, hates smoking.

My aunt was a really heavy smoker and I was really surprised when she quit because I grew up associating the smell of smoke with her. She quit now that she has kids. she is really happy she has and has been quit now for 2 or three years now, I am proud of her!

Grandparents, My maternal grandparents, my gma used to smoke long long ago, now is not a smoker, I never knew her when she smoked, my grandpa not sure if he did never smoked when I knew him.My dads grandparents. My nonna died when she was 30 from a stroke she smoked. My nonno was a heavy pipe smoker and died at 69 of a heart attack.

my other uncle is a non smoker. very mixed bag.

what about everyone else?
