Thank you for your responses.   We don’t know if it is too late or not; here we hope.  Nothing positive that I’m aware of that comes with beating yourself up.   Determination, reasons for quitting are your motivators.

 

Not aiming to insult or belittle.  Yes I remember how difficult and how tenuous my quit was, and yes in the beginning I nearly slipped time and time again.  It is not easy agreed, and people do slip and some are perpetual slippers and that has to be agonizing; I don’t want that for you or Roses.  The mental focus must be that I can, not I think I can.  I can and I will.  You’ve got to take charge. 

 

 Distractions: changes in routines, smokeless friends, place... and I can, are your allies. These are the ones that help one go from I think to I can.  

 

Your quit meter is -9.  Advise to gradually try to cut to zero. You have something special to look forward to: a better, more rewarding life.

 

To the rest of my fellow quitters, I’m not without sympathy; however I am direct.

We can show you the road, we can tell you about the pot of gold that lies at the end of the journey, for surely there is an end to this journey, believe me; and we can encourage you along the way. What we cannot do is prevent you from taking a backward step; that decision lies wholly within your own gift.

 

What I can tell you is at that ALL successful quitters have banished the term "backward step" from their quitting vocabulary. This you must do also if you want to succeed and this you can do also if you REALLY want to.

Come back soon and please try again.  We all have high hopes that you both can do this and sometimes when we have been quit for some time we just want to see all of you succeed.  And the facts are that this addiction is very hard to battle as we see with both of you.  Please try to understand that all of us are just really trying to help you all and we don't mean to make your slip worse than it is already.  As quitters we are really wanting to see success stories so it's hard sometimes for us to see others slip.

I'm so sorry to be reading this.  But as has been said few if any of us quit on the first try.  To both Rose and Steelroots, you've slipped and you know exactly what the reasons were if you look deep enough inside.  So if you really do want to quit, dig that up, inspect it from every angle and use it as armor for your next try.  Even if you both don't post, I agree it's essential if you want to quit for good to come back and read - search everything you can think of, just keep going back pages, because there probably is a gem in here somewhere that will stick with you forever and give you that little nudge you need to keep saying no to cigarettes.
 
The only reason you should look back now is to find the strength to keep moving forward.

Sticking to it, I'm surprised at your response-do I detect some sarcasm?  I'm aware that lung cancer is a given whether I quit now or not.  Also, I'm aware I may not have a lot of time smoking or not smoking.  None of us are promised tomorrow!  It may take more than hope but that's about all I have for today or tonight.  Also, if it makes any difference, I've already beat myself up pretty bad and your comments can't add much to it other than for me to be disappointed in your attitude towards a couple of people that didn't maintain their quit.  Apparently, you didn't have any problems quitting and staying quit or you must have forgotten.  Really glad the other comments were encouraging and they seem to remember their journey when they were where Roses and I are now.

Apparently Roses is leaving and Steelroots is hoping.  You know you guys can get lung cancer and die form this.  Hope is not strong enough.  It is I can and I will do this.  Are you sure you can spare the time given your ages, no way.  Buckle down get with it.  Your smoking time is very limited at your ages.  I wish you both well.  I quit when I was 55 and that is a very late call.  It takes more than hope; simply not enought.

Roses, sorry to read about you having such a hard time, but as you've already read my post and replied to it I don't know what to say to help, I'm in the same boat.  Everyone has good advice and comments.  I was so ashamed to tell the group that I had smoked but I was feeling so guilty, I knew I had to.  That's the really good thing about SSC, they are not judgement and condemning.  Not sure I could handle, I beat myself up enough at my weaknesses and failures.  I'm my own enemy sometime.

Anyway, I feel or think I can identify with you and what you're going through (we've said alot of the same things).
Please keep reviewing and reading here at the SSC forum, even if you don't post.  But your post or replys may help someone else (you never know).  I'm going to set a new date and keep reading and review all the information again and take the advice and reminders of the others that have been where you and I are now at one time.  Many have been quit for years and you and I can do it - we need to keep trying.  Many times in my life I've been "a day late and a dollar short" but I want to try again.  Hopefully, I'm going to make it this next quit and you can too.  Let's move forward and prepare like never before for a quit.  We have to believe we CAN do this.  Hang in there!

Rose, when you are ready to come back, we will be here with open arms!  Just remember that Ben Franklin's first kite didn't fly, and the Wright Brother's first plane didn't take off.  Practice makes perfect!   Do what you need to do, and when you are prepared to fight the nicodemon head on, come on back!  Even if you don't post, please stop by often and read.  I don't want you to miss that one special post that might have a message just for you!
