First Day

My first day, too, and I stopped on my way home to get my car completely cleaned inside and out.  Ashes all over the doors from flicking them through the window, ashes all over the console from where I missed the ashtray, that nasty stuff all over the inside of the windshield, and most of all, THAT SMELL.  All gone now, and the best motivation I have to keep it going.

It's funny how different people have different triggers.  I never smoked in the car, but I can absolutely understand what you mean.  This is a boredom/distraction trigger.  I know other people have been doing singing or using a straw.
 
Have you thought of using a drinking straw?  I know other people have taken a drinking straw, cut it into lengths, then just chewed or sucked it!  It doesn't matter what as long as you keep off the nicotene.  Too many sugar free mints can have interesting side effects.

Yea I'm going cold turkey. I'm actually finding it easier than the other failed attempts when I used NRT's.  I can't actually believe how tuned my sense of smell is and as for stale smoke it stinks.
I'm trying to get my colleagues to use gum or mints after their smoke breaks to smell less but i'm not sure how long they're gonna take me serious. I can smell cigs from a mile away.
Can't believe we all ponged like that. I'm starting to pity nonsmokers for putting up with us this long. Unbelievable.
 
I'm really enjoying this site, I find the typing is really helping to keep my hands occupied and I've plenty of water and mints on stand by for my mouth. Its just driving that really kills me. I've got such a long commute to work and I used to chain smoke in the car. Now my journey home seems to take forever. I'm sure it'll ease in time and I'm really determined to stay off them this time.

Hey that's great going - bring on Day 2!   Just go from one craving to the next, hour by hour, and roll with it.   You should start planning little rewards or treats for yourself every day or every couple of days....some flowers maybe, or something nice to eat.  Your sense of smell and taste will be buzzing soon, so take advantage!  You'll get a real shock when you smell stale smoke on someone else for the first time  .

Hey MammaD,

I'm new here too. I'm only on my second day but doing ok, actually i'm doing more than fine. My hardest cravings are in the car and with a hour commute to and from work each day its tough but i'm coping. I just have to keep telling myself that I don't need the smelly dirty disgusting things and that i'm stronger than that, and you know what I think i'm actually stubborn enough to believe me.
Ok I'm going through the DT's. Shaky, sweating, spaced out and I barely slept last night, and hallucinated when I did but I'm hoping that'll end soon.
I'm surviving by drinking my own body weight in water along with sugar free mints. I'm hoping the mints will help prevent gaining weight coz they have slight laxitive effects.

Don't forget about small rewards every day.  Taking a nice walk!  Find a hobby or something fun to do!  A long shower or bubble bath!  Some simple pleasure to tell your brain that you can have fun without smoking!

Great Mamma D! You can do this! The worst is first!
By tracking my progress I realized how quickly everything improved in my life in a relatively short period of non-smoking time. Everything was a trigger for me so each thing I handled  without a smoke strengthened  my resolve to stay quit. Set your meter and watch how fast time adds up!

Great work on staying tough and remaining smoke-free! Take things one hour at a time, fight off each craving by distracting yourself and using the coping mechanisms that Milestone 4 offers. You can also use Milestone 6 to chart your daily progress and keep track of your experience.

Mid day has arrived and I'm still smoke free today.  I can do this!!!! Just taking  1 hr at a time.  This morning was a little shakey but I managed getting through the one cigarette that I really do miss but I'll get over it with all your help.  Keeping myself busy.  I had forgotten how exhausting I become.  Just want to take a nap I am trying to drink lots of water and keep myself busy.  I find keeping a straw in my mouth helps me get through the cravings along with gum.   Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
