Need some help from the old timers

Hi there, I'm an oldie (but a goodie) & i quit cold turkey fwiw.
 
Two words for you my friend :
  1. Freedom
  2. Knowledge
I especially like the 2nd word, it's the one that keeps you quit.

From what i've experienced the first year is just the warm up. Learn about your Addiction to Nicotine & stay quit for 2 years minimum & i promise you  you will not go back. You will then experience the euphoria of freedom & control over your life once again.
 
Knowledge is the key to staying quit.

The reasons for quitting go on and on, i guess the best one is a good bill of health, not to have to sleep with Oxygen or die a slow death with your lungs full off fluid, that cant be fun, also the reasons to start back will stay in your mind, just remember that is that SOB Nico deamon sitting on your shoulder and he will try and try to get you to fail, just one puff, something has to kill you, do you really like to feel like crap because you dont smoke, you know you want one, Just cut back that will help alot,is the coughing really that bad, who gives a damn if i stink ??The excuses never stop from the ole nicoo deamon,  Ok i will get off my soap box now, plese quit and stay quit  Tresa

I too would love to hear some stories from the 'old timers'.  I am not so much of an old timer but I have travelled this way a few times before.  The things I like best about being a non smoker is the fact that I DONT smell anymore.  In fact ... I bought myself a new perfume so I would smell super nice now!!   and even after so little time (8 days) ... I can breathe a bit easier, so this is good right? The downside is that I keep running out of milk ... because I haven't been to the shop in days (I would normally be in there at least once every day topping up my supply of cigarettes) still ... I have developed a liking for herbal tea and this doesn't need milk 
 
I am away for a bit of a walk now ... trying to out run my frustration and hopefully burn off some of the tons and tons of chocolate that I have consumed this last week ... (Good God!  not even Forrest Gump could do that!!!!)
 
Hhhm ... I rather liked spending a bit of time thinking about the 'nicer' side to my smoke deprivation.

Pete...those are not weird at all...I can relate to everyone of them.
 
I have been back smoking after the year, for 8 years, and I still, every single time I am with non-smokers..all I can think of is how bad I smell...when I go to the movies, I find a seat away from everyone else, when I go see a play, I find a seat back in the corner away from everyone else, when I am shopping at the store, I go down isles where there is not anyone there, when I come back in to my workplace after a "smoke break", I spray cologne on me (which by the way doesn't help at all). I AM so tired of this... COME ON QUIT DATE...October 1, 2010...I'm ready for ya.

Oh, Charm, I remember, even if by my own weakness I got sucked back into addiction!  Here's what I remembe and covet again --- some of the things might seem weird to you, but these are my memories:
 
Being able to talk to someone without obessing about what I know I smell like  (an old ash tray)
Being able to work up to 8 hours without worrying about a smoke break
Being able to be in a car on business or personal travel without worrying about a smoke break
Being beyond "smoke breaks" altogether; I mean, come on:  "smoke breaks??"  How 70s is that??
Not having to check my inventory
Not having to go out in any weather to replenish my inventory
Not having to refuse social invitations because I can't smoke  (SERIOUSLY??)
Not being the only smoker in a group of professionals
 
Is that enough or should I go on?

Thanks Ron for the reply... Just reading your post brought out some memories I remember, the walking (I did a lot of that) around the cart trails of our local golf course (just had to duck every now and then, lol) I remember the first Christmas with the family and I didn't have to worry about the "getting away to smoke", now my husband, at the time, still had to go outside. I didn't miss it.
 
I am looking forward to reading about some of the others' memories..you made me feel better already.

OK, I'll take try to answer you question.  What I loved and have super great memories about was starting new things to replace my smoking that were both healthy and fun.  I took up Yoga the first week I quit and I still remember after sweating for 1 1/2 hours my hands literally looked yellow from all the smoke over the years.  It was so great to sweat out all that nicotine.  I also walked almost everyday at this nature reserve and would just be at such peace that I had quit and was making positive directions in my life.  I also enjoyed relationships with people so much more.  I remember go to a beach house with my family and normally all I would think about is getting away to smoke.  When I quit I could spend all my time being around others and enjoying people's company. I also didn't feel like I had to be secretive about my habit to non smokers.  I also went out much more and was much more open to try new things.  I went to lectures and started to join meetup groups of similar interests.  Finally I started to eat much more healthy.  I bought a blender and started to make smoothies every morning to replace my cigarettes and coffee.  I still do it today and feel great. And with that I also had many ups and downs of quitting going on in the background of these positive life changes.  Quitting can be a great start to a new and better life. Ron

Hi all, Charm here... I am still going thru the program, doing all the exercises and printing them off and reading a lot of your posts.
 
I am having a bit of a problem, I once quit for a year (as some of you have read) and I'm trying to remember back to that time in my life and think of all the good points of my first year of quitting..you know what I'm talking about...all the things that I enjoyed being a non-smoker. Well, for the life of me, I can only seem to remember the bad times. 
 
So all you old timers (figuratively speaking), try and think back to that first year of being a non-smoker and tell me the good memories you have...
