SUCH cool and invaluable insights!!
I'm back from my travels and looking forward to re-connecting with everyone.
This demon will NOT prevail over us.

Winter is finally settling over the Washington, DC area where I live, so it's time to cherish the in-door times, right?

I had a lot of bonding issues with smoking.  It started in Europe running around on trains and smoking with other folks while getting to know them.  Then I would go to bars and meet other smokers where you would go out and take breaks and smoke together.  I would make it out to be such great moments and justification to smoke. When I quit I stayed away from all bars and drinking and hung out all the time with the personal trainer so to say. After 6 months or so I was able to go to a bar and meet others and drink but even that first time I met someone very cool who said he needed to go out and smoke and it did test me strongly.  But I just kept in my seat until he returned and continued the conversation even then talking to him about how great it was when I quit.  I got through it and hopefully next time you will to. Learn from your slips and move forward.

Thanks for injecting your wisdom, Nonic! Very inspirational related to all manner of things that we subject our bodies to.

How is everyone doing this Black Friday? Did any one do some shopping therapy to distract from the cravings? Or perhaps that causes more stress?

Hope you are all off to a great start to your weekend!

Alice and Freedomby30:

I know how hard you are struggling with this and my heart goes out to you.  Sometimes people use smoking as a sort of therapy.  I did.  But you know what? Once I realized why I was smoking, I got mad.  My anger was not directed toward the tobacco industry or toward anyone in particular.  I got mad because I finally realized why I was addicted.  It had a great deal to do with my own vision of myself (you know the one that nobody ever sees). And once I realized that, I took stock.  I took stock in my own self-worth and realized that I was worth saving.  I took stock in determining what I was going to do to make that rescue a reality.  Life wasn't going to change around me until I started looking looking at it (life in general) in a different manner.

I am not talking about some pie in the sky philosophy that somehow makes everyday a bowl of cherries.  I am talking about you and me and everyone else who is addicted taking a good look at ourselves.  We need to understand that we are not perfect.  We have faults and we have stuff that makes us sad, but we also have a wonderful life source, that has been given to us.  Now who among us is foolish enough to look a gift horse in the mouth?  We have the power to take hold of that life and treat it with the dignity it deserves or we can snuff it out prematurely by remaining addicted.  That is the nature of free will.

I know it is scary, but at the same time, it is foolish to destroy the vessel (the body) in order to keep from experiencing the soul.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to take your life back.  I believe that you have the strength to do it and in time, you will see the wisdom of your choice.  For now, you must stand and fight the addiction as if your lives depended upon it.  I promise you that it will get better and that you will be better for having gone through the battle...

stay well

I really like Nonic's post and like Alice said it has also hit a note with me.  nonic I believe you were around the first time I quit and I remember you being just as much of an inspiration as you are today.  Peteg you certainly seem like a strong and determined individual and I believe that you can do this!  I agree that you should review the experience and look at what you learned from it.  From there....be kind to yourself and take care!

Sorry to hear about the little slip up today (actually two days ago) but don't let it diminish your chance at cessation...From your writing I can see that you are a very jovial and enthusiastic person. It is very easy to forget about the goal when life presents an interesting meeting or two.  We do tend to get distracted and go on auto-pilot for awhile.

I think this goal is very important to you and I do hope that you will not beat yourself up.  My wish for you is that you will take the time to review how you got from the table and out on the street with a square in your hand.  Somehow the momentry distraction allowed you to forget that you are on a mission.  Might be good to replay the events and figure out what elements played a role in your decision to bum one.  Perhaps you wished to share a little comraderie with this fellow or perhaps you just got so interested in his ehtnicity that you forgot your own objectives.  I can understand that, but you know me, I am always looking for the reason behind the reason.  Maybe you ought to take a look at the circumstances so that next time you will create a different out come...

In any case, it is good that you are honest with yourself and also that you came back here.  Don't ever give up...

stay well
