Hi there bigdaddy,
The first week is tough, but you'll get through it if you just don't smoke.  Do whatever it takes to not smoke.  My husband and I quit together nine years ago, he played a lot of video games and I bounced on a mini trampoline, took walks, and gritted my teeth a lot.  In time it gets easier.  How long?  Everybody is different, you can't really compare yourself to anyone else.  Read through a lot of old posts here to see how others have handled quitting.  You may want to write down why you want to quit and how you'll distract yourself when it gets tough.  The program here is excellent, without it I'd probably still be smoking.  I'm glad to be rid of cigarettes, they never did me any good.  Hang in there, it's worth it.

Hi bigdaddy,

You are almost through "hell week", the most difficult period for quitting smoking.  Take it one day at a time, remind yourself of your health goals and reasons for quitting and use the following tips when a sudden craving arises.  Congratulations on your decision to quit - we are here for you!

AVOID the situation.

Identify the situations when you normally smoke or feel a craving for a cigarette. For most smokers, high-risk situations include work breaks, finishing meals, having coffee or being in a bar. Plan how you will avoid these situations for a few weeks. Plan for alternate activities.

LEAVE the situation.

If you find yourself in one of these high risk situations, leave if you can. And, leave before you get a craving.

DISTRACT yourself from the craving.

If you find yourself in a situation you can't leave and you get a craving, distract yourself from the craving by:

•     Thinking about something else, like your benefits of quitting smoking (or how much money you’re saving every week).
•     Do something else to distract yourself like drinking water or deep breathing to relax.
•     Think about an upcoming event in your life, such as a vacation.

DELAY taking the cigarette.

If you can't keep your mind off it, then make a deal with yourself that you will wait 5 minutes before you give into the craving. The craving will usually pass in a couple of minutes anyway. If you delay, the craving will go away.

Use SELF TALK

A craving may be accompanied by negative thoughts about your ability to resist it. Use positive self talk statements to combat your negative thoughts.

Hello All! This is day 6 for me and it has been absolutely tough! I came online to find a group of people who might have some ideas on how to keep me from going down to the gas station to buy a pack of smokes? I went cold turkey last weekend. What day does it start getting easier? Help!

Cat_ stay committed to your quit . The family situation will resolve itself whether you smoke or not. You will come through it and you will still be "clean of nicotine" and you will feel great that you "crossed another bridge !" Woo HOO!!!

A member of the family is getting married in a couple of weeks and there has been a lot of family arguments in the last few weeks, some caused by wedding and others between family members over different matters. Find myself the only immediate family of bride going this causing lot of tension

Gudday there catkin, I'm a 5 year + Cold Turkey quitter.

Get yourself a copy of Allen Carr's 'Easyway To Stop Smoking'. You can read it while you smoke up a storm.

I kid you not........... Give it heaps !

Great advice Rock!

Catkin, don't get down on yourself -give yourself time to mentally prepare for your quit.
Have you made pledges to yourself?  It helps to write them down on paper and carry them in your purse so you can easily remind yourself of your reasons to quit and your health goals.

What do you see as being your biggest challenges ahead?

Catkin, have you gone through the program here?  Make sure you are 110% ready to quit before your try again so you don't get discouraged.  A wise friend taught me that preparation is key to success!  Get relaxed, put together a plan, and march forward!  Somebody is always close by here on this site to help!

blown it on day one, made it through to dinner time then took fag of daughtor, bought some while out and off I go again. Try again in a few days. Had big argument with family member, got upset and that did it. Maybe need to be relaxed first
