Hi RMH,

I'm sorry you are feeling this way; it's probably a little disappointing to feel this way after all the preparation you have done.  Although Penitent is completely right, there shouldn't be anything to be sad about, it is common for many people to feel sad or "empty" once they give up smoking. You are giving up something that has been your "companion" for a long time.  You turned to cigarettes when you were bored, lonely, sad, happy, celebrating, relaxing, etc. You almost had a relationship with these terrible sticks. Actually, many people describe quitting smoking as getting out of a bad relationship. Many people may miss the person at the end of a relationship even though they know it was bad for them.  So, know that this feeling is normal, it will pass and you will feel so happy you fought through this time. Quitting will give you uncountable benefits and I promise you will feel better then you ever have once you get through it.  It is ok to mourn the loss now, give yourself time.

Once mourning is out of your system try to focus on the benefits. What benefits are you most looking forward to? Also, reward yourself often, the program can help you build a rewards plan.  In addition, find substitutions, now that you no longer have cigarettes to turn to in certain situations find healthy alternatives. For example, instead of taking a break with a cigarette go for a short walk or meditate. Lastly, post often! You are not in this alone and we can help you through these difficult times.

I understand your sadness...its like giving up your best your friend.  Problem is, its actually your WORST enemy in disguise.  I know you can't see that right now, but take this journey one crave at a time, and don't look too far ahead.  Sip plenty of water, walk, watch good tv shows, nap if need be...just don't smoke!  It does get better, bit by bit, and it definitely is one of the best things you'll ever do for your health.  You are making a hugely POSITIVE step in your life!

All the best to you during your quit journey!

Cheers,
Jan

RMH,

Don't be sad! There is nothing to be sad about! You should be happy at the prospect of giving up those nasty little rolls of hell that could easily lead to unbearable sadness somewhere down the road.

Nah, reserve the sadness for the doc's words that we all dread. Giving up now might prevent that sadness and leave you, well, - just happy like so many of us here!

What a great decision!

Good Luck
Penitent

This is my last day to smoke and I am feeling kind of sad.  I have put many things in place to make sure I am successful but I'm not jumping up and down!
