Hi Czinger, best of luck with your back surgery. I quit due to bronchitis and a upper resperatory infection. Like you I smoked about a pack a day, for me it was17 years. I quit because I'm quite attached to breathing, not because I woke up one day and wanted to quit, I've been quit for over a month. I'm using the patch, and I ate my weight in mints the first week. My best advice is stay occupied, read, draw, chat, whatever you can find to stay busy, I found patches to be helpful but, a lot of folks go cold turkey.

Hi Czinger and welcome! Seems like the decision to quit has been made for you, but maybe you should take the opportunity to do it for your long term health. I am sorry for all your pain, thats sounds pretty miserable, and quitting smoking will be a small price to pay if the surgery goes ahead and makes you pain free.
I quit by using patches and distraction tools, and by cutting down quite a lot prior to the big quit. Try changing behaviours that include smoking, for example changing your morning routine, or avoiding situations where a cigarette is part of the scenario ( talking on the phone, at the computer etc)
Also, come here and share how you're feeling, it does help to talk to us as we are all ex smokers and there's also the health professionals- so there's always someone around who knows how you're feeling and can help.
Let us know how it goes, and good luck for when your surgery goes ahead.

Hi czinger,

Welcome to the site. It is unfortuantely quite common for individuals with chronic pain to smoke more than the general public. This could be because they use the cigerettes as a coping mechanism and distraction but it actually could be making the pain worse. The sooner you can quit smoking the sooner you can start feeling better.

The gum and candy will be a good distraction early in the quit.  What are some other alternative coping mechanisms you could do instead of smoking? Deep breathing, meditation, drinking ice water, talking to a friend, posting here are all options. Can you think of any others?

Be sure to work through the program as it will help you put a quit plan in place. Also, post often in the forums, we will be here to support you every step of the way.

In regards to when the nicotine will be out of your system, Duffis is right, 2-4 days but it varies depending on the individual. In some cases it can take months. So, the sooner you quit the better.

Try to think of this as a great opportunity to quit smoking.  Many will tell you here that quitting was one of the best things they have ever done.  What are you looking forward to about being a none smoker?

Have been there and done that.  Nicotine will leave your body in 3 to 5 days on average.  Everyone is different so your situation can vary.  Smoking will not cure your back and pain problem.  It takes a lot of will and determination to quit smoking.  If your pending surgery is more important than lighting up a cigarette your chances of quitting are going to be far better.  You are going to undergo a lot of physical change which is easy to handle; the rest is in your brain and requires a lot of concentration to cope with the craving that comes from quitting.  Find a quit buddy, mentor or just use this site for support.  There is a lot of help here and many people who are willing to help you.  If you want this bad enough it will happen.

Hello All ~~

Oh geez, where to begin?  I need help!  I've been in horrendous pain for a year and require back surgery.   March 20 is my admission screening.  The surgery will be cancelled if blood test shows I'm still smoking.   I'm guessing I have about 5 days to quit completely?

I've smoked for many years - never tried to stop - smoke pack a day - I smoke even more due to the pain - a disc is collapsed and pinching a nerve that goes into my hip - pain medications don't do a whole lot.....so, I smoke...and smoke....and smoke.......

Today (Monday) I cut back drastically; smoked every 2 hours; limit where I smoke; Did research; stocked up on gum, candy, etc.; spoke to my Dr. and I really want to try this without adding more prescription medications.

Can anyone relate to my situation?  I'll accept any advice or words!
