In amswer to your question Mel, in a word, 'yes'. It has happened to alot of us. I had alot of issues with heart burn, and also gained weight too, but I knew enough to leave the weight gain alone until I knew I could handle my quit, until I knew I was sure of myself, if you will. You can always lose the weight, quitting smoking is so much far more important than some weight gain. Smoking can kill you far quicker than any weight gain at all, and those words came from my Doctor. Stick with it, try to eat healthily, exercise and drink lots of cold water. Cigarettes are very acidic so they will only make heart burn worse. Strick to your guns, you can get thru this and you will be sooooo very glad that you did.
Hey Mel welcome to SSC. Congratulations on your quit, seems like you're doing good apart from the things you mentioned. I reckon most of us gain some weight, with me it was replacing one bad habit with another, reaching for candy or cookies instead of a smoke. I secured my quit then tackled the weight gain, and I am now back to my normal weight.
As for the gas and bloating, I have heard of this before so it may be just a side effect of quitting and something in your diet making the problem worse.
All these side effects disappear with time, and none are as bad as the side effects of smoking, so bear with them for now, they will go I'm sure. Let us know how you're getting along.
Welcome to our community and thanks for introducing yourself!
Your body will react differently to the quit so listen to your body. Are you eating differently? Are you exercising? What kind of coping mechanisms do you have in place?
If these symptoms continue, do check with your doctor to rule out anything medical. Start taking inventory and keeping a journal...figure what has changed and what you would like to change.
We are here to help you through this, so post with us often!
First off welcome Not the same but similar. I had the worst gas and bloating I have ever had in my life 2 days into my quit. I started drinking more water (I already drank a lot or water to begin with), upped my fiber to 35mg a day (figured I needed to clear everything out, quitting stops your processes), and eventually started taking pro-biotics (regulates the fauna & flora in your digestive system). All in all it took about a month to fix it. If I forget my fiber, or the pro-biotic I swell up like a toad. I will hit my 2 month mark this week. As far as weight gain, part of it may be water weight, also it's suggested to increase your exercise (quitting slows your metabolism) and watch what you eat. If your already doing all that and still putting on weight, see your Dr. and make sure your ok.
Hi, i'm a new member. I stopped smoking cold turkey on November 26th, 2011. It hasn't been easy but i keep at it. I'm experiencing a lot of bloating and hurt burn - not to mention that i gained 20 lbs. i've always been very thin so this rapid weight gain concerns me as well the bloating is such an uncomfortable feeling. Has anyone else had the same experience?
