Congrats on your excellent quit so far! Way to go!!! Ice water is the way to go during your first few weeks! It really helps to sooth your dry throat and for some odd reason it has helped many here to slug it down during a crave! Keep on doing what you are doing and you'll be through Heck Week in no time!!
Having a dry mouth could be a sign that your body is getting used to having less mucous. When you smoked, your body produced lots of mucous to protect the airways from the toxins in smoke. Now, your body doesn't need it anymore.
How long will this last?
The first few weeks after quitting.
Tips to help:
Sip ice-cold water or fruit juice, chew sugar-free gum or have cough drops or hard sugar-free candy.
If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
Yes, this was one of the many symptoms I experienced when I quit. Honestly, I cannot remember how long it lasted, but it will go away. As I carried a small bottle of water (preferably iced) with me at all times, to sip on when a crave hit, it helped a lot.
I did sympathise when you said 'paranoia'....I could not believe the number of unusual symptoms I had when I quit! If any of them worry you unduly, do go and see a doctor...most of the time though, they are often caused just by quitting.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, and I can attest to the wonderful feeling of freedom, self-esteem etc. that I felt as the weeks went past! Try the water! Do stay here with us on SSC, read and post and let us help when we can...you are doing so well with 10 days under your belt.
I have also had a dry mouth sore throat etc.I have been told it is the healing process.My quit is over 60 days now and I still get a sore throat now and then
and a heartburn feeling at the back of my throat..
They say when you smoke your body creates more phlegm to protect your throat.When you quit it doesn't need to causing a dry throat.
I don't remember my tongue being dry but I do remember it feeling strange as my taste buds were coming back to life.
I also burnt it a couple times as it seemed more sensitive.
I have had blood work done and I am going to visit my doctor just to ask a few questions and see what differences not smoking has made
I recently quit and am at 10 days smoke free as of today! I chose to quit cold turkey and once I got past those first couple days I was amazed with how much easier it got. Honestly, the only thing about not smoking that is bothering me right now is the fact that I have terrible dry mouth and most irritatingly a extremely dry tongue. Sorry if this was discussed before but I couldn't find anything looking around. Has anyone had some experience with this? It has been about the last 7 days that I have had it and it seems to be getting better with my mouth and worse with my tongue. I really just want to know how long this will last or if I should be getting concerned. I know dryness is normal after quitting by everything I read says it should go away after a week so I am a little concerned.
Any input from someone with personal experience or knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated. I just need to calm down my paranoia that something is wrong with me, and it's always a little easier to get through something if you can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
